I was doing some research into the P/E (Program/Erase) Cycle paradox and realized that your SSD is essentially gaslighting you. We all know that deleting a file just removes the pointer. But the reality is much deeper: An SSD literally cannot overwrite your data even if it wanted to. It’s not a software choice for speed; it’s a physical requirement of the NAND gate. In an old-school hard drive, you could flip a single magnetic bit. In an SSD, physics has a different rule: You can Read and Write in small Pages, but you can only Erase in massive Blocks. Ok so, Imagine a notebook where you write with a pen, but your only eraser is a flamethrower. To erase one single deleted word (a Page), the SSD has to burn the entire chapter (the Block) that word is sitting in. And now because burning a whole chapter is slow and wears out the silicon, the drive doesn't do it right away. Instead, it marks your deleted page as stale and just ignores it. So to eventually get that space back, the controller has to take the rest of that chapter - the files you actually wanted to keep and clone them to a brand-new part of the silicon. Only then can it safely use the flamethrower on the old block. This creates a Write Amplification nightmare. Because of Wear Leveling, your deleted data is constantly being shuffled into hidden over-provisioning areas. You think you have one file; the physical controller has likely made three fragmented shadow copies of it just to keep the drive healthy. Your data isn't sitting there because the OS is lazy; it's trapped because the controller is scared to erase it. Like literally scared cause every erase cycle costs Voltage and Life Span, so the drive avoids it until it’s nearly full and has no other choice. We have moved beyond the era of managing files; we are now managing Voltage Debt. Your deleted data isn't gone, it is physically preserved in the silicon until the controller decides the cost of keeping it alive is higher than the cost of a wear-cycle.

Somewhere within the bowels of a Lloyds Banking Group office there is a greybeard IT guy (called Steve or Gary) who had been planning on retirement last year. but was persuaded to stay on because no-one else knew how everything worked, saying very loudly with a world-weary air to some senior executives with MBAs and economics degrees right now: "I told you this would happen and you didn't listen" And there are a lot of much more junior IT people running around "preponing" meetings while they "do the needful".
