Richard Hughes’ PR is taking a battering tonight. And I’m not going to defend the new regime — Liverpool are definitely undercooked going into the new season. No 6 is a glaring weakness in the squad. On this one, though, Martin Zubimendi had given his word to join the club. If he didn’t want the move he was clearly not right. Not sure Hughes is to blame here — not fully anyway — but you can’t hide that Liverpool need a couple of new faces to close the gap on Manchester City and Arsenal. No quality No 6 for three seasons now. Just look at Rodri and how big City’s drop-off is without him. That’s the difference between a quality operator in there and a makeshift option.

We’ve absolutely wasted a whole summer while Slot “assessed his squad” 18 days left, NO signings, NO progress on contract updates. There’s absolutely zero excuse for both of these situations. While players were at euros, why didn’t we negotiate with agents?
