@nostalgiafkninc ICE facilities shouldn't be needed to begin with. Then no one would die in them.
English

We need more people dying in ICE facilities every week.
An America of 100 million.
Senator Dick Durbin@SenatorDurbin
Someone is dying in ICE custody every week, if not more frequently. This is a crisis.
English

@MariaElenaJMJ I just heard back from X that they accepted my report and found abuse, for what it's worth. The wheels seem to be turning slowly.

Wonder when they’ll remake Fight Club tbh

@LettieriDC @jessrems In 2024 inflation was the highest it’s been for 40 years
English

Important new housing research from @jessrems:
“By 2024, new homeowners were spending 26 percent of their income on housing, compared to 20 percent for existing homeowners — a six-percentage-point gap, the largest in nearly 40 years.”

English

@MAGAVoice @nmlinguaphile They have a special kind of election in Alaska where regardless of who gets the most votes, she wins anyway

“we want a woman of childbearing age but with no baby so WE can be her baby”
VCs Congratulating Themselves 👏👏👏@VCBrags
“Is a woman (ideally between 25 - 33 years old) and doesn't have children” 🤨🤨🤨🤨🧐🧐🧐
English

@Geologistm @higgins31411 @Breaking911 You seem really confident that non-citzen voting is nearly nonexistent, but - how could you know?
English

@higgins31411 @Breaking911 Non-citizen voting is already illegal and nearly nonexistent. Democrats oppose this because roughly half of Americans don't have a passport, and millions of eligible voters especially married women, elderly, and low-income Americans could be stripped of their right to vote.
English

@MOTBemused @rcbregman A lot of us are trying to become that person but we don't become billionaires.
English

Apologies for stealing your words... but I just wish we had billionaires with moral ambition. I wish billionaire status came with a social contract. I wish billionaires understood that by building things that we need and benefit society, they could hack the market adoption curve by creating collective user owned entities by sharing the upside. Members become equity holders. Once you are a billionaire you don't really need anymore... It would just take one to completely alter the perception of what the billionaires social contract is... To arrive to be a good billionaire

@PennMaxxing @markhill It didn't take long at all during Covid for the government to get scared and start mailing out checks.
English

Then again, America is seriously "under landscaped."
If you to go areas like Tucson or Phoenix that have had a long term high labor supply, you notice that *everything* is professionally landscaped.
Even cheap apartment complexes are typically planted out, maintained.
Andrew A.Abbott@realAAAbbott
Common current refrain for displaced office workers is "get into the trades". For 99.9% it will be a massive failure. Elite overproduction is already here, millions of overeducated, under skilled extra bodies that nobody needs. You can already see where the AI refugees are going to concentrate, easy, low skill services. Cleaning, stump grinding, landscaping.
English

@PennMaxxing @Empty_America Once we're in that phase I don't know how we get out of it. There's no economic incentive, and no political process that gets out of it, that I can see.
We seems to assume "government just suddenly becomes completely skilled and full of good will and makes everyone rich."
English

@markhill @Empty_America I think we are definitely going to pass through a phase like this, but for how long?
English

@Empty_America @PennMaxxing no one will have money to purchase from AI whatever it is producing
English

@PennMaxxing No one really knows, but the total amount of money available in the big picture doesn't decrease if Ai takes over jobs.
Most are assuming it will be taxed and given out as UBI, but once the terrible results of that are seen, might be pivot towards making people work.

The Town Square Test
Can you walk into the center of your city, say what you actually believe, and go home safely?
That's it. That's the whole test.
Sharansky called societies that pass it "free societies." He called those that fail it "fear societies."
Simple. Precise. Devastating in its implications.

English

@markhill Of course shortly after I replied I saw an ad without Ad on it. Only a few, most ads still say Ad, but we shall see!
English

@markhill Hmm… I still only see a few ads and no content that I’m not following. Victory is mine (and probably short lived).
English

@muh_pit @his_eminence_j @WatcherGuru Yeah but why provide everyone with a jump in personal well being if literally nothing happens to you if you don’t provide it? We should think about it before finding out the hard way.
English

But what do you need serfs for, if you have robots.
The deflationary effect of AI and robotics could bring about a jump in personal well-being. It’s less about having money and more about access to all necessay services.
This being said, I am also still sceptical, but I am trying to fully understand Elon’s chain of thoughts. My main issue is with vanishing purpose and the mental issues this brings about.
English

@his_eminence_j @WatcherGuru Yeah he hasn’t explained what political process he’s planning to use that will result in the universal income actually being high.
English

There are many things about Elon I admire. His preposterous view of the future, is not one of them.
There will be no “high universal income“. There will be a ruling class hoarding wealth, and serfdom for the rest. That has always been the case.
Human beings do not change: one will always step on the neck of another to climb up.
