I don’t have time to spend one-on-one with all my struggling learners. Sometimes I feel like I’m literally running around putting out fires and many don’t get addressed. Classes are too big and the needs are too diverse. And don’t tell me to “differentiate instruction”. Too much!

Double period math classes r being recommended by some researchers to help students ‘catch-up’ from the pandemic. That does not seem like a good idea to me, but I am interested in hearing what math teachers think. What say you?

@NancyEBailey1 Disagree. Our experience is we are not pushing kids anywhere near as much as we used to. Rigor is gone, there is less opportunity for advanced students to move forward. We coddle them and push them on to maintain grad rates. Nobody gets pushed faster than they can handle.

Making high schoolers do college, middle schoolers do high school, & elementary schoolers do middle school is all developmentally inappropriate, & then Americans wonder why students don't do well on the tests. 🧐

A few kids gathered by the door before our final class ended. Two of em eventually bolted a minute or two before the bell rang. "Uh oh Mr Sage, I guess they have detention now" a student said. "Not exactly, this time they get a warning, then a phone call home, then detention"

This is pretty awesome! Lightning in the eye wall of #HurricaneLee seen from inside the eye. Pause right at the end to see the clear sky at the top of the eye.

Here's to the incredible crews flying Hurricane Hunter aircraft into the heart of the world's most powerful storms. Details from a flight into #HurricaneLee via the Defense Department: "The Air Force Reserve's Hurricane Hunters flight is lit up by lightning inside the eye of Hurricane Lee, Sept. 8, over the Atlantic Ocean. The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, a component of the 403rd Wing located at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, is a one-of-a-kind organization. It is the only operational unit in the world flying weather reconnaissance on a routine basis. (U.S. Air Force video by Lt. Col. Mark Withee)" 403wg.afrc.af.mil/About/Fact-She… (I only flew in one a severe-weather research flight once - in a P-3 around a thunderhead in Oklahoma. I can't imagine the intensity of these flights into the eyes of hurricanes.)

What are your district’s current Covid isolation policies? Still requiring five days and masks after?

@srfrjulie There wasn’t even discussion of Covid at our school leading up to the start 2 weeks ago. But they installed CO2 monitors in every room.

@heymrsbond I’m sorry 😞 we have no dress code and never any discussion of teacher attire. More things to worry about than that. For reference we are union in SoCal.

@RyanMaue Any phenomena that might have led to the extreme cooling in 1917-18? Just looked up and it might have influenced WWI.

The El Niño of 1877-78 was so intense, that even with global warming of almost 1°C, the 28°C tropics threshold was not breached until the super El Niño of 1997. 📈 The years centered upon 1877-78 were the most brutal climate conditions faced by humanity in the past 2-3 centuries. The global temperatures were so anomalous and out of whack that 4% of the Earth's population perished from drought caused famines.

So a second grade teacher and I want to use #ChatGPT in some way with students - just so they can even see it exists. Is anyone doing anything at this level? We are thinking two step math problems right now, but if anyone has used it in 2nd grade I would love any ideas.
