Kepa’s mistake was not a random event, it was a direct result of City’s pressure. They began to dominate in nearly every phase of play: pressing, counterpressing, and regular progression into the final third and the penalty area. The passing maps of both teams reflect this spell

You might think this is a stable effect when teams underperform right after UCL midweek. Zooming out to larger data sample, the aggregate effect largely disappears. An opponent difficulty and a variance could explain much of the "effect". Take this with a large pinch of salt

Which PL team suffers the most after a UCL/UEL midweek? Here are the most underperforming (xG and points per game): Newcastle 25/26: −0.68 xGD; −0.34 PPG Arsenal 24/25: −0.63 xGD; −0.35 PPG Liverpool 25/26: −0.48 xGD; −0.41 PPG Man City 24/25: −0.44 xGD; −0.77 PPG

After watching the Liverpool and Chelsea games, it makes me wonder about comparing Premier League teams’ performances with and without earlier European midweek games

Left - Arsenal's pass map before Eze's goal, right - Leverkusen's after. An illustration of what dominance looks like with 30% possession

Graph compares each PL team's last 9 games against the rest of their season. Since Michael Carrick took over, Man United are the most in-form team in the league, Man City drop to fifth by xG, and Liverpool struggle to convert third-best xG difference into points

I disagree with the "it was coming" takes on the Tottenham equalizer. Rewatching the second half, what was actually "coming" is a second Liverpool goal on the break that would've killed the game. This is outcome-based reasoning, not analysis

As soon as Newcastle abandoned their 4-5-1 mid block and dropped deeper, they became considerably more solid defensively against Chelsea. No more free space between the lines for Palmer. Good adaptation. Chelsea need a better one-on-one specialist on at least one flank

The strength and hold up play from Christian Kofane has been superb so far. Wanna see more of him in terms of creating some seperation for the shot but the potential is there. Someone to keep an eye on.

You can suffer under pressure at St James' Park, fine. But how is your pass completion rate in buildup lower than a "route one" side's? One of the worst Barca performances of the season

Today might be the day that ends the short age of full man-marking in top-level football.

Tottenham's last 10 PL games: dead last in points per game. Meanwhile, West Ham have gone from bottom to top half in that same span

The most frustrating part for Chelsea fans must be that they are one of the best sides in the league at 11v11 data from markstats.club
