Exceptionally strong statement from HASC Chair Mike Rogers on troop reductions in Europe at today's Army hearing: “We are going to mandate that the department follow the statutory minimums that are set in statute on force posture, and if there are attempted deviations, we will remedy them and impose pain when or if they aren't complied with,” Rogers said.

Don Bacon piles on, saying canceling the deployment is a win for Russia and a slap in the face to NATO and Congress after lawmakers passed restrictions on troop withdrawals. "It's an embarrassment to our country..."what we just did to Poland," he says.
Connor O'Brien@connorobrienNH

HASC Rs are ripping the cancelation of troop deployment to Poland at Army budget hearing. "These are major decisions that appear...to be last-minute decisions," Austin Scott says. "I can just tell you we're not happy with what's being talked about," HASC Chair Mike Rogers says.

Will say it again: There are numerous sports leagues that use athletic fields at West Potomac Park, some of the only greenspace left in downtown D.C. Trump, in a Truth Social post, said this morning that the park is a "totally BARREN field of Prime Waterfront Real Estate along our Mighty Potomac River." In reality, it's busy with people most days with warm weather.

Breaking news: President Trump said his administration had selected Washington’s West Potomac Park as the site of his planned “National Garden of American Heroes,” raising questions about whether Congress would need to approve the project. wapo.st/4nvdP93

Acting Army Chief of Staff Gen. Chris LaNeve told lawmakers today that conversations about the cancellation of these deployments and the decision to do so were made "relatively recently." “You say recent — when you say recent, you mean 10 days, or two months?” Republican Rep. Austin Scott asked. “Yeah, it’s probably been within the last two weeks,” LaNeve said, also confirming advanced elements of the brigade were already overseas and equipment was in transit.

A memo from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth abruptly cancelled the deployment of 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team to Poland; the deployment later this year of a long range fires battalion to Germany; and directed the removal of multi-domain command personnel in Europe. Prepared DOD talking points on the change viewed by CNN said the Europeans “have not stepped up when America needed them,” and that “recent Germany rhetoric has been inappropriate and unhelpful.” cnn.com/2026/05/14/pol…

Rep. Jared Golden was the sole Democrat to oppose the resolution, arguing that it was written in a way that, well past 60 days into the war, rendered it moot. But he vowed to support future Iran resolutions, including one that could come up next week from Rep. Meeks.

Breaking: The House barely rejected, 212-212, the Gottheimer resolution that would’ve sought to curb the Iran war. This is the third time an Iran war powers vote has gone down in the House, but the margins are thinner each time.

Ukraine allows Putin’s May 9 parade to go ahead after Trump’s intervention and a promise to exchange 1,000 Ukrainian POWs. No prisoners have been freed, and Putin after his parade unleashed one of the biggest missile and drone barrages of the war. Here is a Kyiv high-rise where dozens were killed and injured last night, including children, and many more still remain under the rubble.

The House will vote this afternoon on a war powers resolution from Rep. Gottheimer to end the war in Iran. This is the first such vote in the House since the 60-day WPR deadline lapsed. The last vote was close: 213-214. Something to watch.

Notable words from Rubio on Taiwan: US policy on Taiwan is “unchanged,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said following a meeting between US and Chinese officials. “From our perspective, any forced change in the status quo in the situation would be bad for both countries,” Rubio said in an interview with NBC News. “One of the things that Chinese emphasize, which we agree, is strategic stability in our relationship.”
Jim Sciutto@jimsciutto

China essentially says the U.S. risks war over Taiwan if issue not “handled well”: “Handled well, relations between the two countries can maintain overall stability,” said Xi, according to a Foreign Ministry readout. “If handled poorly, the two countries will collide or even clash, putting the entire U.S.-China relationship in an extremely dangerous situation.”

Sen. Deb Fischer, head of the Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee, tells me she thinks CBO “made their numbers up.” “I wonder where CBO got the numbers, because, to me, I think they're just spitballing numbers because they have absolutely no idea what is involved in Golden Dome — it’s all classified.”
Audrey Decker@audrey_decker9

Gen. Guetlein responds to CBO number at Tectonic event: "They did not estimate the architecture that we’re building." And those cost estimates use legacy systems. "You can't just take what we've done in the past and multiply it forward or you're gonna get large numbers like CBO."

Fazio's vision for East Po., 7,600 yards from the tips, but looks like one 18-hole course, instead of the 36 holes offered now. Hard to tell from this rendering if they'll keep the perimeter road around Hains Point that people use for running, cycling, hanging out.
Secretary Doug Burgum@SecretaryBurgum

Excited to unveil the design for the East Potomac Golf Links renovation from Fazio Design. Like iconic public courses of Bethpage Black & Torrey Pines, East Potomac will offer locals—of the National Capital Region—championship-quality golf at affordable, highly discounted rates.

New: Sen. Rand Paul’s son drunkenly accosted and hurled anti-Semitic insults at Rep. Mike Lawler at a Capitol Hill bar on Tuesday night. His son told Lawler that if Rep Thomas Massie loses, it’s going to be because of “your people.” “My people?” Lawler asked Paul. “Yeah, you Jews,” Paul responded.  “Do you think I’m Jewish?” Lawler asked. “I’m not.” “Oh wow, I’m so sorry for calling you a Jew,” Paul said.  He then said that Jews were “anti-American” and how Lawler and his “Jewish supporters” served Israel more than America. notus.org/congress/willi…
