Overall view: - Destiny 2 probably should have ended with Final Shape with Destiny 3 already incubating - If Destiny 2 was going to keep existing, it shouldn't have been what we got, which was badly handled - Marathon siphoned a ton of resources and there is no disputing that

I see two paths forward for Bungie. D3 or fully consumed by Sony. Sony wants their money and D3 is the only viable route to it. Im not wrong. Its not copium. Its business.

Full steam on D3 at the "request" of Sony feels very likely here. IMO this shift was a needed and good thing. Looking like the final LIVE update For Destiny 2 in June will be hefty as it sounds to include intended future stuff.

@DestinyTheGame Im just curious, what does that mean for everyone who bought the yearlong pass with the 2 updates ? Does this confirm they are working on destiny 3 or is this just the end of destiny?

Read the full blog at bung.ie/d2_may_21_2026 For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2. As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio. Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to. We’re proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged life-long memories and friendships with you all. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made that journey with us. From the deepest part of our hearts, thank you, and we'll see you in the stars.

@PaulTassi The way they end the blog post makes it sound like either there is another destiny game planned or they will be switching off the servers at some point.

there will be a number of changes and additions to the game with the next update (not delayed), but functionally the game will be static from here. An awful ending for a game and series that deserved a more coherent, thoughtful conclusion, and investment in the IPs future.

Destiny 2 is ending. All expansions cancelled. No more content updates after this last one. It's over.

@markyd823 @MacticsG1 Hell, thats even assuming Sony would greenlight a D3 (and Bungie changed their mind on their opinion of D3). Bungie using D2 as a sacrifice and Marathon having an abysmal launch and first month Bungie is gonna be on an extremely short leash assuming Sony doesnt start absorbing.

I feel marathon unfairly gets a lot of flak for "causing destiny's downfall" as many claim it did. Destiny has been heading down this road for quite some time. The franchise fatigue has consumed the playerbase. If it wants to thrive instead barely survive, it needs to evolve.

@MacticsG1 Yeah there was fatigue but Marathon pulled the resources to renew the game and/or start developing a D3. If Marathon didn’t exist then Destiny 3 would be well into developmet by now. As it is D3 is 3 to 5 years out at a minimum?

Sure marathon pulled resources, but acting like players weren't already exhausted isnt accurate. It needs a forge mode, meaningful clan systems, player housing, true MMO elements, and things that go far beyond new weapons or activities. Thats what I dream of when I think of D3.

I wish feedback for destiny was acknowledged and implemented as quickly as it is for marathon. I dont know what they are doing differently behind the scenes to be able to strike so quickly on changes but it is remarkable to see and makes me feel so valued as a player.

@JakeParkerLIVE @MarathonTheGame We have always know bungieis capable of produced AAA content. The problem their consistency to do so for what ever reason. It seems they only produce great content when the financial pressure is on.

Call me a Bungie schill, I don't mind. But if @MarathonTheGame is any indication of what Bungie is now capable of doing and the incredible things they can create, I have a strong suspicion that we're in for something good with Destiny 2 in the future that's worth the wait.

@AscendantNomad I’m still of the opinion they need to strip the tech out of the cars and go back to having a small light car (80’s/90’s) style. Needs to be about driver skill not gimmicks to help with over taking.

@PaulTassi Do we know what the long term income plan is (apart from a micro transaction store). I’m guessing they will some what copy the destiny formula of paid for battlepasses every 3 months ish and possibly have to purchase extra maps each year?

and yes, Steam charts! In the end I think this is actually decent four day hold for a game that comes out in a few days and everyone knows they're losing everything. That plus pre-sales is *hopefully* a decent sign, we'll see

@PaulTassi Marathon is at #3 best seller on Steam in the US and #4 globally. Ahead of Arc in both (behind RE Requiem and CS which is a free to play). This bodes well for its launch.

@AboveTP @thepoolshark Do you think it will launch like a Destiny release has recently? Not very good to start with until the tweeks and patches roll in the months after launch? Would it survive that cycle or would it be DOA?

I don't think it's manufactured by any means. Bungie didn't do themselves any favors with treatment of the D2 community, initital negative reviews, and then the blatant plagiarism. So I'm not surprised people wanted to see it fail. With that said, I'm a huge extraction shooter fan and tried to go in with an open mind. I have 600 hours in both Tarkov and ARC Raiders so decided to give it a fair shot. The first day was not great. I don't think the game does a good job getting you invested in the gameplay loop within the first 6-8 hours. The gameplay loop grows over time, which is good! But it doesn't make a great first impression. Enemies feel bullet spongey due to bad weapons, TTK feels insanely fast due to bad shields, heat capacity is AWFUL at a base level. So at first, it seems extremely clunky and misbalanced. But as you get more loot, faction upgrades, etc it starts to feel much better. But because it takes a while to get there, people will drop the game before giving it a proper chance. I think with a bit of tuning it can be a really solid game. But I still stand by a lot of the original issues I brought up in my original tweet reviewing the Server Slam.

My favorite thing about the Marathon discourse this weekend is the changeup by people. The ones who gave it a second go and spent more time in are now coming around to the game. Almost like the manufactured hate wasn't warranted
