Batik (amba & titik) geometric patterns carry sacred semiotic value; an expert can identify a pattern’s origin from its shapes and colors alone. Reducing its textile, cultural, and traditional significance by calling it a “printed abstract shirt” is downright insulting. Does the US still produce its best design alumni? This stunning painted marble relief, known as the "Scattered Music Ensemble" (散乐图), captures one of the earliest depictions of a full Chinese court orchestra from the Five Dynasties period (907–960 AD).
