Heads up! The administration is proposing to eliminate NSF funding for the social sciences, including economics. COSSA has set up tools for contacting your representatives in Congress to share concerns about this move. Reaching out *now* could ward off the risk that it happens.

If current cuts to the Federal Science Budget proposed by the White House are approved by Congress, that will far-and-away be the largest cut to science since the United States began funding it. Republicans & Democrats alike know there’s no surer path to Making America Not-Great

The Trump administration has proposed dissolving the National Science Foundation’s Directorate of Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE), potentially beginning this year. While the FY2027 Presidential Budget Request proposes eliminating SBE, reporting suggests that steps toward dissolution may already be underway within NSF. Dissolving SBE would discontinue almost all NSF support for economic research and professional activities like professional conferences. The economy is changing rapidly, and it is crucial that businesses and policymakers understand what is happening in the economy and how changes in economic policy affect households, workers, businesses, and financial markets. Businesses need this understanding in order to make myriad crucial decisions. So do policymakers, like the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Congress. If you care about giving businesses and policymakers the information they need to understand the world and to make the smartest, most informed decisions they can make, then you should support funding for NSF and for SBE. Funding for NSF and specifically for SBE should be increased, not cut. Nature article: nature.com/articles/d4158…

President Trump’s high-risk decision to attempt an overthrow of the Iranian regime — and the reaction to it — demonstrates that the centre of gravity on the political right remains much closer to its George W Bush-era positions than is widely thought. Moreover, across the board, the most durable successes of the Trump era are likely to be the ones most in line with traditional conservatism. What distinguishes Trumpism is largely personal to Trump: his impulsiveness, celebrity and style. These lessons won’t be lost as the race to succeed him begins in earnest next year. My @FT column.
