JPEGMAFIA “EXPERIMENTAL RAP” - 4/10 This sounds like an album that was made to exploit and provoke very specific reactions from our niche communities in hip hop to get ppl talking about it, cuz if he did what we all wanted (good album w beats that aren’t like anything we’ve heard w raps that try to say something and are more dynamic instead of repeating the same tropes) we’d speak about it for a week and move on instead he made an album blatantly disrespecting experimental/abstract/weird rap for the lolz (cuz the project is almost mocking ppl who make experimental rap including himself) cuz he knows the way he made this album would elicit the exact predictable reaction of “um acksually this isn’t experimental, it’s quite boring and sounds like everything he’s made and honestly? jpeg is bad! and was never good he doesn’t do enough!!” I say all of that to say we, ideally, should NOT engage w the album, were being manipulated into talking about it publically (like every other project put out by a semi popular/mainstream artist) because the very things we don’t like about the music are the things this product was manufactured/created to have so that ppl talk about it more

@lookatmyopinion @LiminalRite Dude you’re acting like the interpersonal relationships are something super deep when in reality it’s just him telling people to stay on that side. It’s justifiable and a valid critique to not want to hear that for a song / theme of the album.

@masonbonzo @LiminalRite It’s not a real critique of the music, it’s just personal bias judging what’s allowed to be talked about. He’s completely allowed when writing material to vent on the things that bothered him, especially interpersonal relationships.

@le_monm Ngl I do agree the flows get repetitive but I they don’t really get stale. Like each song draws me in just as much as the other despite the flows sounding the same.

@lookatmyopinion @LiminalRite Yeah because a grown man venting about people not picking his side in a rap beef is something everyone wants to hear about for an entire album. And it IS a critique of the music, the content of a song is apart of the music/quality.

@masonbonzo @LiminalRite It’s not understandable though. He interpreted the line with a personal bias on how he perceives the artist, which is why he calls it cringey. It’s not an actual critique of the music. Unbiased people don’t think it’s cringey, they see it as an understandable venting session.

@lookatmyopinion @LiminalRite 2/2 it’s completely understandable to not want to hear Drake tell people “stay on that side” and “the beef didn’t affect me” for an entire album. Like everybody has moved on except for you man it’s been two years give it up.

@masonbonzo @LiminalRite It’s not true and it’s not a valid criticism. Drake is allowed to speak on things that bothered him when making his music. Fantano interprets it as “cringe” because he has an agenda in mind. It’s not something to take a serious critique. It’s a personal attack mostly.

@LiminalRite I watched his review man, he essentially said that Drake is throwing a temper tantrum on this album towards all the people who didn’t take his side in the beef, which is true. And all of it came off as cringe, it’s a valid criticism of the album

@LiminalRite Yeah and it’s a valid justification considering the content of what Drake is talking about. Drake is being whiny and having an elementary school mentality by saying “well since your friends with him I’m not friends with you”, it’s cringe and a valid reason to dislike the song

@masonbonzo Fantano’s justification for dismissing the song is that he doesn’t care about Drake & Lebron’s relationship. You are talking about other things. If you just want me to say I think the Charli song is better than the Drake song I will, because I do. I ❤️ both Charli XCX & SOPHIE.

@PHONZO4700 @LiminalRite Man be serious Drake is trying to say he’s cutting off people who bump Kendrick. It’s like the equivalent of your older brother ghosting you because you sided with your little brother in an argument. It’s corny and annoying to hear it over and over in a song.

@LiminalRite Except Charli and sophie came up in the industry together and were close, sohpie isn’t just “some experimental producer” that Charli worked with. The content that Drake is rapping about coming off as whiney is a completely justifiable reason to dislike the song. 1/2
