The Promise Amara Kept🥰 When Amara first met Femi, they were both students at the University of Lagos. It was during their second year, on a rainy afternoon outside the library, when Femi offered her his umbrella after noticing she had been waiting almost thirty minutes for the rain to stop. That simple moment became the beginning of something neither of them expected. Amara was different from most girls Femi had met. She was calm, intelligent, deeply respectful, and carried herself with quiet confidence. She wasn’t interested in attention or temporary relationships. Femi admired that about her almost immediately. And Femi… he made her feel safe. Their friendship grew naturally. They studied together, shared meals at small restaurants near campus, laughed over late-night conversations, and slowly became inseparable. Everyone around them already assumed they were in love long before they admitted it to each other. One evening, while sitting under a tree near the hostel after exams, Femi held Amara’s hand and spoke honestly. “Amara,” he said softly, “I know life may take us in different directions someday… but I want you to know I see my future with you. I don’t want what’s temporary. I want something real.” Amara smiled shyly. “I feel the same way,” she replied. “And the man I marry someday… I want him to be the only man I give myself completely.” Femi looked at her seriously. “Then wait for me.” Those words stayed in her heart. Before graduation, life suddenly changed. Femi received an opportunity to travel abroad for work training connected to a company in America. What was supposed to be a short separation slowly turned into years of distance. Phones changed. Numbers were lost. Social media was not as common then, and communication faded little by little until eventually… they lost contact completely. At first, Amara waited every day for his call. Then every week. Then every year. Her friends told her to move on. Some laughed at her for still believing in a promise made by a young college boy fifteen years earlier. But Amara was not waiting because she was naïve. She was waiting because what they shared had been genuine. Over the years, many men came into her life. Some were wealthy, some handsome, some ready for marriage immediately. But none of them touched her heart the way Femi did. And through it all, she kept the promise she once made under that tree. Not out of fear. Not because anyone forced her. But because love, to her, was sacred. Meanwhile, in the United States, Femi built a successful life. He worked hard, eventually becoming an engineer in Houston, Texas. Yet despite the success, a part of him always felt incomplete. He dated occasionally but never found the peace he once felt with Amara. Sometimes late at night, he would remember her laughter, her gentle voice, and the way she believed in love with her whole heart. Fifteen years passed. Then one December, Femi returned to Nigeria for the first time in many years to attend a friend’s wedding in Lagos. And that was where he saw her again. Amara. Standing near the entrance in a beautiful emerald dress, looking even more graceful than he remembered. For a moment, Femi could not breathe. “Amara?” She turned slowly. The second their eyes met, it felt as though fifteen years disappeared instantly. “Femi…” she whispered. Neither of them cared about the noise around them. They simply stood there staring at each other in disbelief, overwhelmed by emotions too deep for words. That night, they talked for hours. About life. About pain. About missed years. About everything they had carried in silence. Then Femi asked the question that had quietly lived in his heart for years. “Did you ever… move on?” Amara looked down gently before answering. “I told you once that the man I marry would be the only man I give myself to.” Femi’s eyes widened. “You mean…” She nodded softly. “I kept my promise.”👇
