It’s sentences like this that make people throw their math textbooks out the window.

If there were a “My Favorite Axiom” podcast a la Kevin Knudson and Evelyn Lamb’s “My Favorite Theorem”, my choice would be mathematical induction, and the food I’d pair it with would be the potato chip. (Bet you can’t eat just 1, or 2, or 3, or ...) twitter.com/myfavethm/stat…

@DrEugeniaCheng In my experience, being incomprehensible is used not only to *feel* clever, but to propagate the myth that your work must be deeply clever, and to act as a gatekeeper against others getting quick results from your insights ...

I wonder if anyone has ever looked at the retweet-to-like ratio. For the types of tweets that are likely to be retweeted, it seems that the ratio is approximately 1:2 or 1:2.25. Here are some recent ones of mine.

No concrete context here, I was just musing in general how the concept of mathematical proof can be taught and motivated. The question is not meant as a disdain for rigor in math class, but as a mental exercise. What would you tell a student who challenges you with it?

Math teachers: What value is there in trying to prove something that seems obvious? I’m looking for truly honest answers. #iteachmath #mtbos #eli5

I dare you to stop using the word "talented". The idea of "talent" perpetuates the myth that there is something you have to be born with in order to be good at something.

I think it would be easier to stop using the word rather than change people's understanding of it. Many definitions of talent involve something "natural" not something developed. I think most people would think it odd to say "I became more talented by working hard". twitter.com/morpheu5/statu…
Andrea Franceschini@morpheu5

@DrEugeniaCheng I would rather we explain that talent is something you can acquire and develop with dedication, perseverance, and managed expectations. The word itself is not wrong, it has an inherent positive value, but the widespread misunderstanding could be redressed. @MobilePedagogy

Let me put it this way: a false proposition implies any proposition. For example that Bertrand Russel is the Pope. bit.ly/2EGreca Formal economics starts from a false proposition. Logically, that's the end of the road, game over. We have to start again from scratch.

I'm writing about matrices & it strikes me that the literal definition of a matrix is very not representative of its utility in math. "A matrix is an array of numbers..." "Serena Williams is a member of the phylum chordata." Not incorrect but somehow spectacularly not the point.
