@mathgeek76

I’m so out of being part of this shitshow of “what was formally known as Twitter.” Find me and say “hi” at https://t.co/tOoxKe7DBW.

@schelperkw @MakeMathMoments glad you were there! i was a bit erratic given my cold and lack of sleep. but i was also pretty fired up! so tired of the stupid things we do that erode teacher flourishment.

I just watched Chase's session for @MakeMathMoments virtual conference, and I'm sad I didn't sooner! Amazing stories and necessary conversation. Thank you, Chase, for being a voice for change!

@MandyMathEd @Sneffleupagus I’m deeply concerned that our current culture of professionalism (standardization, top-down, treating kids like their test scores that need to be raised, working alone in the silos of our classroom, PD that is disconnected from our reality) makes this job not worth the effort.

"It's a hierarchical blame game." @mathgeek76 I was just having this conversation with @kdykema yesterday. We need MORE vertical alignment conversations, MORE learning from our colleagues who teach different grade bands. More awareness that we're one stepping stone on the path.

If linear functions are just first degree polynomials, then why is the standard form for lines different from standard forms for higher degree polynomials? Why do we care about Ax + By = C? And why are we spending hours and hours of math class teaching it? Asking for a friend.

@BradBMath all interesting cases. i’m in the camp of “what math is going to be useful for our future world?” and this is all cool/groovy stuff, but i’m struggling to see the value other than “it’s on the state test”… maybe after this lesson study cycle, i’ll feel different.

@mathgeek76 Drawbacks of this form: - Doesn't describe y as a function of x - Many different names for every line (2x+3y=5 is the same as 4x+6y=10) - 0x+0y=C is the whole plane or none of it - It's another thing to learn.

@mathemactivist Textbooks and state/national standards refer to “general form” or “standard form” for polynomials. And also for linear functions. Any reason why they are different? And how do we explain to disgruntled 9th Alg1 students why they should learn this topic?

ChatGpt offered this nugget. In short, we care about the standard form Ax + By = C because it’s a simple, powerful, and flexible way to represent linear relationships in both abstract math and real-world applications. I’m not buying it. Come at me #mtbos #iteachmath. Tell me.
