A few years ago, I met a chef and asked him, "So, bay leaves? Do they even have a point? You can't taste them. You have to take them out. They seem to get in the way."
He shook his head and said, "Nah, it's the opposite.”
"Wait, what?" I asked.
"They're the invisible heroes of the culinary arts. Bay leaves won't give you a distinct flavor. They don't stand out. It can be so subtle you don't even detect it. But what they do is offer depth. They're a small thing that makes a big difference. They're working behind the scenes to amplify everything else. Trust me, they're a big deal."
It has me wondering . . . what are the bay leaves of education? What are the small strategies that seem almost invisible but have a major impact?

Asking prayer from the math community.
It is with much sadness to share that we lost our oldest son. He was such a joyful, kind, and fun young man. I feel like part of me is missing.

@mrrgteacher @cluzniak @robertkaplinsky @Mathcation I did it from the left as well and saw 33 and 88 missing

@jerseyjazzman @plthomasEdD Yes, meaning, structure, and visual. Visual is phonics. I’ve been teaching first grade for 20 years and phonics is a huge part of balance literacy. It’s ridiculous to say it’s not.
English

@plthomasEdD Am I way off, or is one of the cues in three-cueing actually phonics? (Again, this is not my field, but I'm trying to get a grounding)

@vickizun @plsurprinciple It goes farther back than that. I was teaching during George Bush’s No Child Left Behind. Kinder was full day and their were more standards than there are now- not to mention the high stakes testing in 2nd & up

@plsurprinciple Changed 20-30 yrs ago. Each yr, parents who understand child development scream.
No one listens until their kid suffers it.
Likely has caused Gen Z's mental health issues.
K was 1/2 day, play, writing the alphabet, learning the sounds letters make until Bill Gates' common core.

@JenniferKillick A parent wrote a very kind letter about me to the superintendent and principal. I also received a blanket that the child had made - one of those fleece blankets with the tied edges.

@paul_emerich That’s awful. The need to control instead of empower teachers is a huge problem within public education. You wouldn’t hand a lawyer a manual and a script and blabber on about fidelity. Why do we do this to teachers?
English

@mathin2ition The problem I see is that there’s a “way” to do guided reading that doesn’t let teachers observe, reflect, think, and then respond to student needs. I know teachers who are expected to follow a specific program for guided reading and it only makes it harder to serve kids.
English

@paul_emerich Serious misconceptions about guided reading are rampant. It’s not about not sounding out words and looking at pictures. It’s about teachers being highly trained to deeply understand reading and the reader and making strategic decisions to guide the reader.
