@drjamiewatson I'm happy to buy a time share for that Norwegian writing cabin you were thinking about a while back!

@historykev This is discussed in Carter. Since s. 7 was enough, they didn't address s. 15, but they described the lower court argument:

As I have patiently explained to you many times, Michael, #assistedsuicide is nothing to do with autonomy. 1 You can do it yourself - you have "the right to die". 2 If you have the right to assistance and there are any safeguards, someone else must okay your decision, which is not autonomy. 3 If you think that anyone should be able to make a private arrangement with another to be killed, you must also campaign for duelling and consensual cannibalism. Do you?
Michael Savage@GrumpyArt

@historykev We don't know that at all. But I won't be drawn on the details when you're determined to oppose AS on principle. Starting point needs to be respecting human autonomy, and then we can debate the practical details.

@igrantubc @hannahshewans Because we don't know that women are accessing MAID at a greater rate because of their social inequality. We don't know that social inequality has anything to do with it.

@mathisonej @hannahshewans Anything that consistently results in dead women is a woman's issue – it's not a numbers game. If women are accessing this for reasons related to their social inequality – how can you suggest it's gender-neutral.

@hannahshewans @RachelCDailey Most places, including Canada and Oregon, don't break down the reasons people give by gender, so while your predictions are possible, where's the data that it's actually happening?

@mathisonej @RachelCDailey My primary argument in this piece is that women could be more vulnerable to opt for it due to cultural and financial issues, incl being more likely to feel like burdens, to have less financial means to support themselves in late life, & they're more likely to be alone in illness.

@RachelCDailey @hannahshewans My point that slightly more men have assisted dying was in response to Hannah's claim that "Women are also a potentially vulnerable group." The worry that women will have assisted dying in greater numbers isn't supported by the data in places where it's legal.

@RachelCDailey Which assumptions did I incorrectly make? @hannahshewans's claim is that women are being left out of the debate. My response is that women are, in fact, well represented in the debate: a woman tabled the bill, Carr has her own BBC documentary, Rantzen is in the news, etc.

@hannahshewans Yes. I'm wondering how a woman with her own BBC documentary about assisted dying supports your thesis that women are being left out of the debate.

The data simply don't support Gaind's conclusion of 'social murder'.

Since there were only 116 track-2 deaths, it's important to look at the raw numbers. 28.4% of people in the lowest material-resource quintile is an extra 9 people from an even distribution. The gender imbalance is due to 26 more women than men having T2 MAID.
