Small update from the battlefield: I obviously asked around because I am attached to staying alive.😅 The nurses put me in touch with a technician and when I explained he went “But why doesn’t she want to watch it on the tablet?.” I looked at him with the exhaustion of a woman who has seen things and said: “Listen. She is 80, hospitalized, grumpy and Serbian.” He looked at me with immediate compassion and went“Oh. Right. Okay.” 😭 So: no Chromecast and no direct Netflix on the hospital TV either. BUT an HDMI connection should work just fine. He even offered to come help if I can’t manage it alone because in his words “mothers are precious.”🥺 So tonight I prep, tomorrow I test everything in her room… while she listens to“our little ones’ songs,” because yes, she has already asked me to play Arirang 😭💜 And thank you all so much for your suggestions, too. I even discovered a few I’d never heard of before, and I’ll definitely be trying them myself. 💜

Came to the hospital early to see my mum this morning. And before anyone asks, I am still avoiding the physio after last time. 🙄 I walk in, she gives me the look. I hand her her little magazines, ask how she’s feeling, she complains about the doctors, asks about my kids and then asks about “the boys.” So I tell her “Their album is out tomorrow and Saturday is the live.” She goes, very seriously:“What channel is it on?” I say: “…It’s not on a channel.” She says: “Ask the nurses to add the channel.” I just stand there like, how do I explain modern life to this woman? So I say “No, Mum, it’s on Netflix.” And without missing a beat, she goes: “Well then put Netflix on. I want to watch it.” Not“Can we?” Not: “Would that be possible?” No. Put Netflix on. I offer to bring my tablet so we can watch together. She looks offended, like I’ve just suggested watching it through a keyhole and says: “Don’t be silly. Go watch it with your ARMY friends. I don’t want you here.” Then she adds: “And why would I watch BTS on a tablet when there is a television right there?” And I genuinely have no response. Because she is, unfortunately, making a point. So I say: “Well… I don’t know if they can put Netflix on hospital TVs.” She says: “Then ask.” Just that. Then ask. Not a trace of doubt. No sense that this may be an unusual request for a stroke recovery ward. So I’m standing there wondering how to phrase:“Hello, excuse me, purely theoretically, is there any way to turn Room 214 into a temporary BTS screening room by Saturday?” And the worst part? In her mind, this is just a logistics issue. A technical delay. At one point I say“Mama, I really don’t think it works like that.” She stares at me and says:“You don’t know because you haven’t asked.” Brutal. Because that is Serbian mother law in one sentence. You may think something is impossible. She thinks you are lazy. So that’s how I end up wandering around a French hospital at sunrise, trying to figure out how to connect a tablet to a hospital television so my mother can apparently become a Netflix ARMY by Saturday. So, yes. Recovery is clearly progressing.😬😇
