There is no confirmed identity for the man in this photograph. His name was not recorded in any surviving expedition notes. But his purpose is clear... In early 20th Century Hawaii became a living laboratory for botanists, surveyors, and government researchers. They carried large plate cameras into deep valleys and wet forests to catalog native plants. A person’s body became the easiest way to communicate scale. If a tree was enormous the simplest proof was to stand next to it. If a leaf was almost absurdly oversized you placed a human being right beneath its veins and let the viewer do the math with their own eyes. Maui’s upland rainforests produced specimens that looked prehistoric. Giant ferns. ʻApe leaves larger than torsos. ʻApe leaves in Hawaii can grow up to six feet long under ideal conditions. © Reddit #archaeohistories
