@Oskisstraw Yeah, I imagine if cal ends up ever launching a program, it’s more because the NFL is paying them to do it / they need to better comply with Title IX. It’s not the same calculus for like, St Marys or western Illinois

@MattBrownEP Yes, like I assume this is more of a high acceptance low enrollment school phenomenon, since if you already are selective and at capacity for new students you wouldn’t be gaining revenue, at best just shifting it existing enrollment to a flag football student athlete.

the majority of revenue that flag football is going to generate in the next five years will come from tuition from athletes that aren't on full scholarship and since the operating costs are so low, you can be "profitable" without selling a single ticket.
theMaltesefalco@themaltesefalco

@MattBrownEP If it isn’t rating on TV then how would it be affordable or sustainable? Where would the revenue come from to make it so?

I imagine the Utah State beat has already shared this, BUT JUST IN CASE, here's the contract/salary/buyout info for new Utah State head MBB coach Ben Jacobson:

@AndyStaples it is kinda weird that more private schools haven't done this, isn't it? I guess lots of school presidents decided esports could give them a similar benefit, but cheaper

@MattBrownEP This is why I every private school in America should have men’s and women’s lacrosse. It’s just adding 50 full-tuition paying students, and their parents are happy to pay.

@Oskisstraw you mean schools that are very restrictive in who they accept? those GENERALLY aren't the institutions that are desperate for tution revenue...although there are exceptions

@MattBrownEP Genuine question when these situations arise, does it just not apply to schools with matriculation / acceptance rate issues?

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if like, 40% of D1 flag football programs don't even sell tickets in their first year or two of varsity! And that isn't an insult or a pejorative in any way.

@imperialstanda dog, if you can get the supreme court to throw out the plain text version of the 14th amendment and ditch birthright citizenship, I absolutely believe you're on the legislative path towards denaturalizing people born earlier who fit the critiera you described

@MattBrownEP That’s great, that doesn’t change that what they’re doing right now would not affect your citizenship. Again, I think you know this.

If you can affordably and sustainably create high-quality competitive and educational opportunities for women, AND create new educational opportunities for more students on campus, who gives a shit if it rates on TV? That's not the point!

I have no idea about the potential television appeal of women's flag football, but I do think it's worth reminding folks that there are plenty of other very good reasons to sponsor new college sports that have nothing to do with maximizing broadcast viewership.
G. Alan@JTown50

@MattBrownEP Like pickle ball and corn hole, this is not a sport that will interest viewers. No one wants to watch this.

Speak of the devil. The @BigSouthSports just announced they will sponsor women’s flag football as a league sport, starting in 2027. Five leagues schools have announced they’re adding the sport, with potentially more to come.
Matt Brown@MattBrownEP

I think I might have been underselling how quickly this sport is gonna take off. I heard about another P4 league having similar convos earlier this week, and can think of at least three major conferences having similar convos. 70 D1 teams by 2028 doesn’t feel impossible

@ralphDrussoATH Also,,,,you aren’t being paid “endorsement” dollars from a taxpayer funded public institution! A school spends nine bucks to buy my newsletters, that’s a public record! This is one of the only spends that isn’t!

Fair point. But what is being called NIL _ rev-share is an NIL payment under the terms of the settlement _ is in fact a salary for playing. The lack of transparency is not the athletes' fault AT ALL. But I actually don't think they benefit from it either.
AJ Winters III@AJWinters3

@ralphDrussoATH What is your salary? Pro endorsements dollars are not public. If you want college athlete to have public contracts make them employees. Otherwise how is it your business ??
