Last week there was talk that the upcoming sentencing review headed by David Gauke could introduce a presumption against short sentences, but today’s there’s this, how do the two reconcile? Ministers to give magistrates more sentencing powers theguardian.com/law/2024/oct/1…

@ProfAlexStevens @LessCrime Armstrong and weaver spoke about the iatrogenic damage of short prison sentences in a paper in 2010. Your paper looks really interesting - look forward to reading it!

@WarrCriminology Hi Jason, this sounds fascinating. I agree with your point on the nrc, and there are similar concerns for accessing probation research as well.

A further point raised is about the warping (and negative) effect that the NRC, which has not operated as an ethics board since about 2016, has had on perceptions of, and access for, #prison research. #Criminology 2/3

🚨🚨🚨 #ForensicPsychology + #prison Key themes of book: twitter.com/WarrCriminolog…) In podcast, I also discuss a wide range of related issues. Most a propos is that institutions that rely on whisper networks to keep women safe from predatory men fail everyone. #Criminology 1/3

A difficult post, but I wanted to let people know that Joe and I have lost our twin boys, Robert and Matthew, who passed away in the sixth month of my pregnancy. We are very very sad but coping, and my physical health is improving. We had a beautiful funeral for them last week.

Without sustained support, there’s a risk of these individuals entering prison through the ‘back door’ of breaching orders.

Individuals serving short sentences commonly have the most acute needs in the cjs and will need robust and meaningful support, I don’t think that tagging, or community service from an overstretched probation service will suffice.

This article makes an important point: less use of short sentences is a good thing, with extensive evidence that they don’t work. However, its just moving the problem from one part of the cjs to another less visible part, that has its own acute crisis. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Government isn't consistently supporting prison leavers to resettle into the community & the quality of services has declined. In 2019-20, 30% of prisons were rated as 'good' for rehabilitation & release planning. In 2022-23, there were none. Read more: orlo.uk/EOPMe
