The Bob Dylan politics discourse rules because the people who've spent ten years going "erm actually all art is political" are now saying that there are no politics in recording a gospel album with songs with titles like "Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)".

It's terrible Bob Dylan turned his back on the folk movement and protest songs. He could've changed the world with his music. Not a single artist has ever come remotely close to changing the world with music, but maybe he would've been the exception. Who can say.

Regardless of one's view of Dylan's music, the discourse here shows how much we've lost the idea of artist as trickster, mystic, chameleon, or really anything other than Goofus or Gallant who must bluntly state the Right Opinion always or else is bad Wrong Opinion person.

Saw Nick Cave in Paris recently at the Accor Arena and I was really struck by that song Joy where he sings “We’ve all had too much sorrow, now it the time for joy.” I was thinking to myself, yeah that’s about right.
