@PhilWhomfield A while ago, the wife and I went to a pub that was temporarily trying to be a bit bougie. I ordered the pasta in white wine sauce, her the triple cooked chips. When I tried dipping the chips in the sauce, I had to admit it was a far superior carb.

@leap_dog There are cities I went to a decade ago that are, In terms of food, drink and nebulous “culture”, utterly unrecognisable today. Any memories people have of a city or larger town 7+ years ago are basically meaningless.

the problem with all this discourse is that this trend you identify with young urban progressive americans has and is happening with young urban progressives around the world and that is like 75% of who engages with this discourse.
Liam@LegoRacers2

Americans (esp. young urban progressives) are very proud of developing a more sophisticated food culture since the 1980s, and are shocked that the Brits still see us as culinary provincials, viewing themselves as more worldly. This is the core of the “taco” pronunciation debate

@kokorobitch Yeah, I mean I sometimes fry red onions in wine (lots of sugar) and a friend of mine does maple syrup. But to be fair, the Brit talking about adding caramel was taking the piss.

the caramelised onions discourse is confusing me because *some* recipes do call for sugar to be added. it’s not universal but it’s not unheard of either

@himbopotamuss Ah, that makes sense. As a citizen of a country whose flag has also been hijacked by nationalist idiots, I can fully understand.

@mattrum91 I’ve only been to Berlin but I loved it! (I’m an American rooting for Germany in the WC which is why the flag and also the US but I can’t bring myself to put our flag bc I don’t want to be seen as a MAGA weirdo 😭)

I have no interest in eating a giant raw onion but British sandwiches are legit when I studied abroad for a summer in Oxford Oxford we would eat these ham butter and cucumber sandwiches on the lawn while drinking pimms cups it was heaven

@himbopotamuss Interestingly, two of the best summers of my life were spent in America. You wouldn’t know that different countries so could be so chummy just by looking at twitter. Sadly (in reference to your flag), I’ve spent precious little time in Germany.

@kenny_macleod @himbopotamuss That’s super charming 😁 If you’re ever that way again, there are some kayak tours you do in areas like Buxton that are super quiet (basically because the river is too thin for any motorised boat) Also a good area for otter spotting, but I’ve never been that lucky.

@mattrum91 @himbopotamuss On a boating holiday on the Norfolk Broads years ago and a Walls ice cream boat would pull up to your boat to get a 99 or lolly 🍦

@Kaarnema @jess_ann_pin That’s just absolutely not the way it happened. People were using it to mean “sub human”. There was spite. Never heard “idiot” used in the same way. The taboo came from the usage.

@mattrum91 @jess_ann_pin The "woke police" didn't change the meaning; they just focused on that word out of several equivalents and branded it as a uniquely bad slur – perhaps because it happened to be more common in the right circles at the time. But they still could've chosen any of the others as well.

Why is “retard” more offensive than “moron” or “idiot”? This seems so arbitrary.

@Kaarnema @jess_ann_pin There absolutely was “retard” jokes about Stephen hawking in the 2000s. And it’s not arbitrary; people act like the imagined woke police changed the meaning, not the people who used it against people with mental disabilities.

@mattrum91 @jess_ann_pin Has "retard" actually been used against all people in wheelchairs? Hard to imagine someone calling Stephen Hawking that. I agree that language changes. That was also my point. That "retard" is now a slur and the others aren't is arbitrary. It's not predicted by the term's use.

@Kaarnema @jess_ann_pin I mean, I’m not sure if “moron” was used as a slur against people in wheelchairs, for instance… But even if it was, once again, language changes. Idiot is not offensive because it’s not used that way. Much like “hells bells” was once a swear word in the uk, but now it isn’t.

@ouranometrian2 Washing chicken. Not hanging out laundry. General “hygiene olympics” can get pretty crazy in the US, too. Oh, and seeing public transport as a poor/dangerous thing.

@Schoolboy_Hew @ParisPhl Yes, this is absolutely true. Not saying that this is the case everywhere, but when many Americans have to drive 2 hours to their nearest shop, fresh veg isn’t exactly possible.

@mindrelic @emmatpnlovebot It’s said that Americans put sugar in everything (“even milk” you’ll hear a lot). The reality is normally that the US is a corn-based country, rather than wheat. Although, wonder bread does indeed have sugar in it.

@emmatpnlovebot To be fair, when I have visited the US, American cheese was the default on every burger. Sometimes you’d get Swiss or Monterey Jack which is a bit better. All cheddar was mild. Only saw flavourful cheese at specialty shops.

@LauraRbnsn Tbh, I don’t get this, either. This is an old man sandwich. There’s things to love about British sandwiches, though. When I ate meat, this ham hock, mature cheddar and onion chutney sandwich was an absolute treat, and has some of the spirit of the original photo.

@yet_so_far I know that,m the render is better for preserving the building, but the bare stone looks so beautiful. Part of me thinks it’s fickle to “restore” a building to a less preserved state, but another part says, “preserve for what?!” Feels like keeping a painting under a dust sheet

Obsessed with this Facebook group of people restoring old Irish cottages. These people took the render off their exterior and now look at it!
