This is a gripe and it’s going to sound judgmental but please hear my heart. If you’re going to do an outreach event at your church, prep your congregation for new people coming to your church and teach some basic hospitality.
I took my kids to a trunk or treat at a church in town today. About 12 cars or so decorated, and maybe 50 total people.
My kids (6, 4, 2) made their rounds and got candy and while they were doing that, I received a gospel tract that read: “Where will you spend eternity?”
After the candy collection, my kids played in a grassy field behind the church and I stood there alone watching. Not a single person approached me, asked me how I heard of the event or offered me a hot dog, which they were grilling nearby.
I did observe a lot of people who seemed to know each other hanging out and having fun, and that’s great but imagine this for a second.
Imagine if I was a lost person, without Christ and on your church property wishing I knew about the God that this church preached.
Imagine if I was struggling with deep guilt or shame in my sin, and you knew the answer was in Christ, but you decided not to at least strike up a convo.
What if I was just lonely, and would benefit from some casual conversation with another adult.
None of that happened.
I felt… invisible.
I couldn’t wait to leave.
And I’m a church person.
Here’s the kicker.
I would imagine this church is praying for new people to join, and engage God’s work through their ministry and I bet some of them would wonder, “why didn’t anyone from trunk or treat return to our church for worship?”
I’m no expert here but I do know this.
Unless your congregation is equipped to be hospitable (and it’s not hard, “hey dad! I see you’re alone with 3 little ones today! Keeping you busy. Want a hot dog and Coke? I am Jim. What’s your name?) do NOT do outreaches.
Rant done.

@mechvibrations Let me know when you make it back. I grew up there and love sharing the best places to go and things to see.

@oneinvestorguy @erichoke I think his question stands. Why do you need one?
English

@erichoke You haven’t been car shopping in a while have you? A $60k suv is a bare bones base model low end SUV.

@BikeABQ I appreciate the information, I didn’t realize that a lack of providing bicycle accommodation during construction was out of compliance. 311 is about to be flooded.
English

@BikeABQ Here is a spot on Pennsylvania at Prospect, where the bike lane is now the driving lane, and there is no accommodation or the bare minimum, “share the road” sign. FYI

English

@matty_bees Although the City’s Complete Streets Ordinance mandates accommodations for all modes of transportation during construction or repair, a 'Share the Road' sign is the bare minimum they could have provided in this case.

I think @EFprocycling is having a wrecker of a TdF. In the breaks, yellow jersey, KOM, stage win, three natl. champs. Just a banger of a year.

Ohiopyle is the #1 reason to own a car in PGH.

I don't know if I'd necessarily use the word "remote" to describe Ohiopyle, but man would it be great not having to drive a car to visit
