We naturally measure greatness in football by trophies, individual honours, goal involvements plus a sea of other statistics. The scale of sacrifices made to achieve the greatness, the odds, the starting point in relation to others, and what your achievements mean or can influence beyond sport hardly ever colours the conversation.
Yet where you come from, the obstacles you scale, the intense discomfort you embrace, the setbacks you shake off to succeed - and the impact of your story, beyond sport, to millions around the world *is* the greatness.
I don’t think we fully appreciate how Mohamed Salah, from a rural village in Egypt, under all the political and social turmoil in his country, with the horror and wide-ranging consequences of the Port Said Stadium disaster, and given the lack of interest in, aligned with a poor perception of Egyptian players, reached the top of the game. Let alone stayed there to set new benchmarks.
On the back of nine years covering him, I’ve spent the last few months talking to people in his hometown and across Egypt, to teammates, coaches, backroom staff from the national team and at every club he has played for, to supporters, journalists, social researchers, imams, and campaigners to get a true understanding of Salah, his influence and impact.
I thought I knew. I actually only had the smallest idea.

There are the goals, the assists and the lengthy ‘only Mohamed Salah’ records. There are the trophies, the ending of long waits, and the individual honours. The one-season wonder doing it over and over and over again. 374 direct goal involvements in 435 games.
There’s the symbolism of the ‘Never Give Up’ t-shirt, the top off ‘now you’re gonna believe us’ celebration against Manchester United, *those* moments in the tensest of battles against Manchester City, a hat-trick at Old Trafford, the collective heartache when he was forced off in tears in Kiev, the shared euphoria during that selfie celebration in the title-clinching win over Tottenham…
That doesn’t even scratch the surface of what he’s done, what he’s given, what he means to millions around the world.
It can’t fit into a post, so thankfully I have the space of a whole book.
One of the very best there is, there ever was, and there ever will be.

One of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. When I am rich I’m buy a lil’ house there and be George Clooney’s neighbour 😅
