dating with a girl who has a dual padawan cut... like a little braid on both sides but otherwise short hair, and i feel the moment coming where i'll tell her it's a dual padawan cut

i've just finished the most mind-boggling, cathartic, intelligent novel that hit the philosophical part of my mind like a truck and now i'm sitting in awe, completely speechless. i don't know what to do.

people whose sole critique of a piece of media (i.e. shadow lord) is a nitpicky argument about powerscaling being subtly wrong is the most annoying type of human being

if all we had ever gotten was phantom menace maul, he wouldn't be a very interesting villain. but when lucas decided to bring him back in TCW, along with sam witwer's incredible performance, it started an arc that created the most compelling villain in all of star wars.

Devon is the best executed fall to the Darkside I've ever seen in SW. Most characters end up coming off as naive morons who do a sudden 180, but Devon entirely understands what she's doing and that it's bad, but her hatred is so great she doesn't care

I don't like this heavy mischaracterization of others to push some nonsensical story; yes I'm no longer involved in their lives but they are not deserving of the onslaught of slanderous dogpiling. John is not a homewrecker, and Kyedae never did anything malicious. That's all.

I have little doubt that AI tools will substantially change the way mathematics is done, likely pretty soon. But communicators like this are doing their audiences a disservice. In this particular example the “new” contribution from the AI tool was plugging (n,m)=(5,3) into the expression 2n-m. I’m not exaggerating. The “number of multiplications” in the result in question was shown by Winograd ~45 years ago to be 2n-m, where the matrices in question are nxn, and m is the number of factors of the polynomial x^n-1. The “result” here is that this polynomial has 3 factors over Q(sqrt(5)), and then that 2*5-3=7. That’s it. Winograd’s result itself is an application of the Chinese Remainder Theorem. At present, novel results by AI tools might tell you a few things. They tell you the model is smart! But in every case so far, they also tell you the result was not the focus of attention by experts, and that the result could be deduced by methods that are routine to experts from known results. And if someone claims the results are very significant in themselves (rather than because of what they say about the pace of progress), they tell you that person is full of shit. To be clear I have little doubt this will all change soon—the rate of change is so rapid you’d have to be blind not to see it. And even if capabilities did not improve any further, the ability to automate “routine” but nontrivial work would be a huge deal for math research. That automated tools can make progress on minor open questions is incredibly impressive. But that doesn’t excuse inaccuracy about current capabilities.
