‘Pattern Index’ is a collection of many pattern generators, all layered upon layers in a process that I wasn’t sure if would work, but then some magic came along eventually with a new audio-visual collaboration created by Katia Schutz and Jack Fisher on the way soon.

Creating my latest album “On Being” was like finding a secret window into our collective psyche, and discovering amongst the chaos, pleasure and pain, so many experiences that we share at different times of our lives, and an overwhelming sense of emotions and connections that I had to explore. This track came from a quote that was so poignant I felt I had to remove some of it for the track title. The full quote being “I yearn for a child. Mother nature must have a different plan for me.” It’s such a delicate and intense statement, it hit me hard and stayed in my mind for many months before it presented itself musically in any way. The way I write music has always been very heavily focused on a full body experience (bass massages, space pads and panned clicks etc). So the extension of adding spatial audio was a natural one. It opened a lot of doors for storytelling.  I'm really looking forward to bringing my new 360 live / dj hybrid show to @Polygon_Live this weekend, I’ve got some space mangling things to try out and plenty of old favs. I hope you can join us.

When I Sit Alone. In My Thoughts. I Am Crushed. Watch my new video by the great @axonbody via link in bio The quote arrived on my album website after I asked “What do you want to express, which you feel you can’t in everyday life?”. Using thousands of anonymous quotes, my On Being album attempts to capture the experience of being human, now. This was one of the first quotes from the database that reached out and grabbed my guts and squashed them. I had to tackle it, and I immediately contacted @aho_ssan with the idea, because his approach to music contained some of the intensity and noise elements that I felt were needed to deliver the quote. It was submitted anonymously, so over the past few years I had a story in my mind about who submitted it and why. But then ahead of the Bristol show I heard from Robbie Evans, the writer of the words, who I met at the show. If any of you submitted any of the words in the project I’d love to hear from you so I can put a face to the name of the words I’ve spent my last 3 years with. The writing process began with a live improvisation on Void and Vista Folds, which formed the structure of the 7 minute sequence. I then jammed with my hardware synths and pedals to introduce the aggression, and sent everything to Aho Ssan, who mangled and layered on his special blend. The final touches came from a visit to Taichung, where recordings of the night market feature in the track, and finally, over compression to pump a sub bass into obliterating everything else to reach for some new chaos, for any you who have the full frequency response available. It was pure catharsis, and maybe not something many people will enjoy listening to, but that’s where the quote sent me, and hopefully it will be worthwhile for some of you.

The sea of quotes you submitted as part of my latest album project On Being, created in collaboration with Ksawery Komputery and Minjeong An are available via my link in bio and onbeing.maxcooper.net The submissions are in response to the question “what do you want to express that you feel you can’t in everyday life”? The words you sent hit me hard. After so many years expressing myself musically I was receiving many of the same feelings back, and the project became a new form of two way conversation for my creative process. There was such a huge array of human emotions there with feelings from love, longing, grief, pain, and misery to boredom and excitement - the full breathe of being. I choose specific quotes to work with for each track, wherever I could find a way to represent a particular idea or feeling musically. I spent a couple of years working on those translations, and I'll explain them all in detail over coming months as the visual collaborations come along.  I also wanted to be able to present the collection as a whole with Ksawery and Minjeong, so we built in installation version of the album which will tour in parallel to the live shows. This on being installation contains the entire collection of quotes and also allows you to add your own thoughts in real time to integrate into the wider project of our shared psyche. The point of all this being that it’s hopefully helpful, and enjoyable. Your words will also be coming on tour with me and feature in the live show. On Being - my new album is out now What do you want to express that you feel you can’t in everyday life? Asking a question to all of you who were listening to my last album, set a path to this new one. Many thanks to all of you for putting forward so many feelings to work with.  Link in bio for streaming / 12” / Atmos It began when I started reading the database of thoughts. It was like finding a secret window into our collective psyche, and discovering amongst the chaos, pleasure and pain, so many experiences that we share at different times of our lives, and an overwhelming sense of emotions and connections that I had to explore. Usually I render my own thoughts and feelings and find out later whether they resonate with others or not. Now I could start from the resonant thoughts at source, and make my own interpretations of those musically and visually. It was intense. The quotes carry so much weight. Individually they are extreme, but as a whole collection I found it quite overwhelming. I tried to channel that through into the music, so we have something more intense than my usual, particularly for the moments when I tackled the most brutal of the quotes.  The album website is now live with my thoughts and themes from the record. The album is available in Dolby Atmos created with the great Richard Burki at Future Phonic Studios for the full spatial audio experience. If you wrote any of the quotes appearing in this project I’d love to hear from you so I can put a face to the words I’ve spent my last few years with. As the majority of quotes were submitted anonymously (shout outs to May Kaspar, Robbie Evans and New Age Punk who feature on the record via your quote submissions).
