@MrKCincy @JonnyBengal They’re similar, it’s just in the 3 drafts leading to the ‘21 offseason, they spent fewer top 100 picks on defense. The guys they brought in in FA complimented them as well. There was just more flexibility due to using less draft capital.

@JonnyBengal IMO, that means 1 of 2 things, Could be that he’s the biggest name out of that group OR that he’s the only extension that they’re willing to go above and beyond to get done before the season. The other guys may have to wait a year to get what they want.

So, you never heard Joe talk about Myles, Dax, or Jordan specifically? No, it’s not a disconnect. Those are players they want to play with. Every player has a list of players they want to play with. Again, they want to WIN, those comments tell me that they don’t care about who is on the defense, they want to play winning complimentary football. Get the guys on the field who can get the job done.

@maxmurp_ @JonnyBengal I think it’s a fair question to ask. I heard them praise DJ Turner. But when Burrow says this offseason is huge, and star wideouts are naming star players, but free agency is more about enhancing players we have. I’m asking, does that feel like a disconnect? Just askin

1. Lou didn’t use/develop our young players. If you got his system, you got a shot… it set us back. 2. If Lou refused to play young guys, then Al trying to develop and use players should be a welcome site. 3. Raising the floor by bolstering the personnel around young players to raise their floor and learning potential. Raising the floor also raised the ceiling. Individually and as a unit. 4. Al has had the defense for 1 season. Mid season, he adjusted. Already proving he was an upgrade form Lou. We should be optimistic that he isn’t just improving but he’s using the players the right way. Fit > Skill. 5. Everyone judges results with no context, good and bad. We really saw an adjusted look after the bye last year with greatly improved results. We already bolstered the safety room 2 fold; once by removing Stone, again by adding Cook. Mafe replaced an aging stud pass rusher who wasn’t good against the run. Oh, yeah… we effectively didn’t have him last year anyway. Another 2 fold improvement. Jon Allen is a proven vet disruptive presence who will demand attention. Will allow for vet presence and growth for our budding stars. Also raising the ceiling. 6. All the improvements, even if not at LB (yet) improve the LB room. Less volume at the 2nd level. Improved tackling at the line and the back end. 7. We are heading into the draft with needs… but in a position where we can potentially take BPA and will likely have a stud at one of Edge, IDL, DB and maybe a LB if Styles fell. We should be a lot more excited about this offseason. #WhoDey

And if you had questions about if they were going to replace the “emergence” of players like Knight or Carter, think again.

@JonnyBengal Yep, Duke’s been saying it all along. They want their draft picks to play. That is where they believe their A-Level talent will come from, the Draft. I like how he put it “enhance the emergence of players”. This Free Agency period was meant to supplement, not supplant.

Joe mentioned “I think the NFL takes care of guys that advocate for it” during his interview. He knows what he’s doing playing in this flag football game.

@maxmurp_ I think we’re going to see both Stewart & Mafe be Jokers they move around into different spots in the front 7. The Vyper role in Golden’s Notre Dame defense. I think Mafe is the type of player they envisioned Stewart to be when they drafted him. I think they hope they now have 2

@thewanderer2020 They’re not making that switch, but I understand what he’s thinking as well. This thread is showing kind of what we’re all thinking. Showing a 4 man surface, then using a “LB” to come down late.

@maxmurp_ I don’t think they will be a 3-4, but I think you will see Mafe lined up at LB more than people expect, which is also why you haven’t seen them go out and sign a true LB. You could have something fun if you can get Murphy, Stewart, Allen, Mafe, & say Bain on the field together.

What’s wrong with banking on the development of your draft picks and why is this considered hope? Was it hope to change out half the staff with guys who are known to develop talent? Battle, DJ, Dax, Murphy, Stewart, Knight and Carter SHOULD be expected to improve. That’s not hope
