One of the experiences that shocked me as a young adult happened in 2013/14 while I was a young teacher waiting for admission into higher institution. My head teacher (let’s call her Mrs Cy) was a fierce woman, she headed the primary section with a strong fist and unwavering spirit, the only thing that was missing was a child. She has been married for years without a child and different people have proffered solutions all of which she had tried but none worked. We arrived school one Wednesday morning to learn that teacher Cy has resigned. We thought she had an issue with the proprietress but that was not it. It was the next day when the story started circulating that we found out that her husband has impregnated one of our students who teacher Cy taught in primary school. She just completed 17yrs old. She tried managing the situation but the girls mother insisted that her daughter will not be a mistress or a 2nd wife to anyone. An ultimatum was given to the man to either divorce his first wife and marry her or they terminate the pregnancy. He chose the 17yr old girl and her baby, bride price was returned and the marriage between him and teacher Cy ended. Last I saw them, she already has three kids for the man and she is doing well. Teacher Cy left town and I haven’t seen her since.

My daughter got back from school, took her bath as usual, then this girl quietly went to carry one of her outing dresses and was almost running out of the room thinking I did not see her. The minute I saw her, my African mother mode activated immediately.
