The first Mario movie was a bunch of set pieces, easter eggs and elements from the games thrown together with a paper thin plot and the second seems to be the same thing on crack cocaine.

No, they didn't expect some life changing Pixar film, they just expected the bare minimum storytelling you see in other good movies. Even tho I like Mario, it's not crazy to say it could've been a bit better, as is, it's fun.
