@AmericanGwyn I remember very well the feeling of reading THE GIRL WITH CURIOUS HAIR in 1992 and hearing my own (generational) voice in the text in a way that had not happened before. And it wasn't in an aspirational style or out of reach. DFW was reporting.

I’m not a DFW superfan—I actually prefer his nonfiction to his fiction, especially A SUPPOSEDLY FUN THING I’D NEVER DO AGAIN—but the way people connected with his work fascinates me. He became one of the big Gen-X voices—people felt like they were reading the ambassador of Gen-X.

@shelfbyshelf I second Tartt, Towles, Chabon. Add Tom Wolfe in general, but especially “I am Charlotte Simmons.” Lethem’s “Brooklyn Crime Novel” did a bunch, too.

Looking for a scene where a character meets a new group of people who all already know each other—trying to figure out how to choreograph it, I guess, for this latest draft. Any books y’all like for this? Let me know!

@JeffSharlet What I’ve read teaching undergrad nonfiction has changed me. I consistently reflect upon how these kids also have some smug prof who has no idea. I’m amazed by the transparency and humor I see every semester. Gallows humor, sure, but what else?
