One of the best paragraphs from the How to Do Great Work essay by Paul Graham: "Being prolific is underrated. The more different things you try, the greater the chance of discovering something new. Understand, though, that trying lots of things will mean trying lots of things that don't work. You can't have a lot of good ideas without also having a lot of bad ones." That passage, for whatever reason, hit me hard today.

While I believe the SBF guilty verdict is the right outcome, imo it's not a day to celebrate - billions in user funds were lost and our industry took a massive reputational hit. The only winners were a few law firms and various opponents of crypto ~6 months before FTX' downfall, a family member asked me what I thought of SBF. Wrote a v long response, will share a few quotes from it here: "Everything he works on and supports is highly centralized and looks a lot more like what crypto is supposed to improve on. If you view crypto / decentralization as a movement, he has co-opted it rather than contributed" "He pushes the 'don't miss out' brand of crypto marketing which is basically just making people who know nothing about crypto feel like they have to buy it - which I find to be shady because it encourages rushed/fomo based investing rather than thoughtful investing/education" "I don't buy his effective altruism at all - I think its a clever marketing shtick. Basically he profits off sketchy business that harm people but gets to call himself an altruist because he claims he will eventually give all his money away" Next cycle, we need to do better as an industry - focus on the tech + our values, recognize the warning signs, and ignore the personality cult sociopaths

@Jason web3/blockchain is a broad umbrella. there's a reason so many PHDs & applied cryptographers are still bullish on the space & its not because of the crypto shitcoin grift, its because of the infra opportunities

For a decade, I said most crypto projects were a scam, and I got brigaded with laser eyes saying, “Have fun being poor.” I was right, of course, but I give myself little credit for it. Why? I had done the work to look at ~100 crypto startups and was shocked that they almost all got funded without ever building a product or having customers. The only ones that did something customers got value from were money storage and money transfer. I tracked the most promising ones over time, and they almost universally never had customers using their products to do something… or anything… except… … but the shares/tokens of the founders of the project 🤔 Then I watched a bunch of grifters flood in. They realized that no one seemed to be tracking anything, and they could print fake money and sell it. I explained repeatedly that eventually, when there were enough victims, this would all blow up. That’s basically where we are today. Crypto is fantastic for money storage and transfer, and 99%+ of the projects outside those two use cases never arrived. With one little side quest, the immutable JPEGs, which I thought were cool and fun… but absurdly overpriced for the fun they created.

@jefielding Vision. It's the fuel that keeps the founder, investors, & team motivated to keep building. If you don't believe in the grand vision, no reason to keep going.

On a panel tonight and a founder in the audience asked… ‘does vision or execution matter more at the pre-seed?’ I said execution, other panelist said vision. Vision can change but the ability to get from 0-1 is everything. You cannot pick both as the answer. Wdyt?
