Mohammad Khatami served as president from 1997 to 2005. During his presidency, the July 1999 student protests were violently crushed. Security forces stormed Tehran University dormitories, beat students, and killed and injured protesters. One of the most iconic victims was Ahmad Batebi (known online as @radiojibi), whose photo holding his friend’s blood-stained shirt became a symbol of the uprising. He was arrested and initially sentenced to death. At the same time, Khatami publicly labeled protesters "traitors." He has also repeatedly chanted "Death to America" while seated beside the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Despite Larijani being removed, there are other cases. There needs to be an investigation into how the family members of #Iran regime officials complicit in grave abuses of Iranians and Americans were allowed entry into the U.S. (and Canada and Europe) in the first place. Officials in Western capitals are either incompetent, criminally naive, or there's something more nefarious going on here. There should be a thorough transatlantic review from top to bottom as to how for so many years this was allowed to happen. It's a disgrace.
