During the Publishing Masterclass Training under the NCC2026 pre-conference activities at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Dr. Adones Rukundo from the Faculty of Computing and Informatics presented on academic publishing, outlining the anatomy of a strong research paper. He explained that a paper begins with its identity, title, authors, abstract, and keywords, followed by the context, which includes the introduction and literature review that establish the study and identify knowledge gaps. The core of the paper consists of a clear methodology, objective results, and a meaningful discussion, while the paper concludes with a strong conclusion supported by credible references to ensure academic integrity and completeness.

During the Publishing Masterclass Training under the NCC2026 pre-conference activities at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Dr. Edwin Mugume introduced scientific research as a systematic, controlled, and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about relationships among natural phenomena. He emphasized that research is not just information gathering, but a structured process of discovery that produces new knowledge. He distinguished research from simple data collection or opinion sharing, noting that even accidental discoveries only become research when subjected to a structured process of verification and understanding. He further stressed that research must be problem-driven, goal-oriented, cyclical in nature, and interpretive, requiring not just the presentation of data, but meaningful explanation of findings. Dr. Mugume outlined the standard research framework as identifying a research question, setting objectives, applying a structured cycle from hypothesis to data collection and analysis, and presenting results in the format of Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results, and Discussion.

“A discovery you cannot communicate is a discovery that does not exist,” Dr. Fred Kaggwa, Dean of @MUSTUganda FCI, opened the Publishing Masterclass with a strong call to action on research visibility and impact. He emphasized that MUST trains brilliant minds, engineers, software developers, IT specialists, and biomedical and mechanical innovators, whose knowledge must move beyond laboratories and dissertations into global academic and practical conversations. “Too much of our research remains between four walls, never reaching journals or peer review,” he noted, urging a shift from isolated work to published, shared knowledge that contributes to global solutions. Dr. Kaggwa expressed appreciation to @UCC_Official and Makerere University for choosing @MbararaUST as a host, marking the beginning of stronger efforts to push research from classrooms to the global stage.

Turahi Aaron, LC5 chairperson for Isingiro District, reflected on the changing nature of parenting and family structures in the district: “In the past, parents guided their children through stories and daily interaction, but today that connection is weakening.” He welcomed the CONNECT Project as a timely intervention to rebuild parent-child relationships, strengthen guidance within families, and address the growing social challenges affecting adolescents, pledging continued district support to scale its impact.

Drawing from her background in infectious diseases, Prof. @PbyakikaPauline raised concern over declining HIV/AIDS risk perception among adolescents: “When I hear that young people are no longer afraid of HIV, it worries me deeply. Prevention must begin at home.” She re-echoed the central role of parents in guiding and protecting adolescents: “If a child is not guided at home, they will seek guidance elsewhere." Prof Byakika called for scaling the CONNECT model across Uganda to strengthen families, inform policy, and build a healthier generation.
