@ntvkenya @jamessmat @EricLatiff There is need for concerted efforts by all stakeholders; professionals, Government, investors, residents etc. The law on water harvesting in buildings should be enforced, constructing beacon to beacon to be discouraged, leaving open spaces to allow water percolation etc.

I bet when we will be out of the woods with these floods and heavy rains issues, a good number of tenants and home owners will re-consider staying on the ground floors when the structures they stay in are multi-storey.

FLOODS IN PARKLANDS BROOKSIDE AND 1st AVENUE Today, I attended to flooding complaints from residents of Parklands, specifically at Brookside and Parklands First Avenue. The flooding in these areas is largely due to the construction of houses on top of River Kibagare. This situation will not end unless these buildings are demolished and relocated at least 30 meters away on both sides of the river to allow its natural flow without obstruction. This is a historical problem that dates back to the time of the former City Council, and it requires a long-term solution. We will engage the Water Resources Authority to help us map out the affected structures. In collaboration with the national government and the Nairobi River Regeneration Commission, we will move swiftly to repossess the river’s waterway. With the growing population and increased development in Parklands, most green spaces have been replaced by concrete. As a result, rainwater has no place to percolate and ends up in the river and drainage systems, which were not designed to handle such volumes. This leads to flooding in Parklands and other parts of the city. To build a flood-free city, our county engineers are working closely with the national government to develop a long-term solution that will serve Nairobi for the next 50 years or more. This is a process that requires time and careful planning. As the Environment Department, we are working diligently to prevent further damage by unblocking drainage systems and collecting garbage from road reserves, as we support the government in providing a sustainable solution.

Tuko Works, and we must do our best to ensure that floods are mitigated during this rainy season. Every city resident has a role to play in keeping the environment clean and ensuring our safety, especially during this period.

The impact of climate change has been felt across the globe. With increasing temperatures, heat waves, rise in sea levels, floods and drought- the time to collectively act is NOW. As we mark this special day, let us make a point to educate and actualize on environmental conservation and planetary stewardship. Happy Mazingira Day!

A national calamity is an emergency. Deaths, destructions & despair. Ruto has requisite instruments to effectively instantly respond #floods disaster. Sadly, tragically, as an entire nation engulfed in distress, lethargy clearly evident - sadistic, nonchalant cabinet 'tea' walks
