Chelsea can only use the name because they play their home matches at the Bridge, as stated in the lease. If the owners try to move permanently without the CPO’s approval, the CPO could take back the name. To keep “Chelsea FC” at a new stadium, at least 75% of CPO shareholders would have to agree. This rule, set up in the 1990s, protects the club and stadium from being sold or moved without fan support. Temporary stays elsewhere, like during redevelopment, are usually fine, but a full move is risky. Stamford Bridge has been our home since 1905.
