From there, he’s left with a very challenging shot, and to get it close, he’s going to have to risk it coming back off the green.
A better executed tee shot and he wouldn’t have had to deal with any of this. But now he’s left with 18 feet for par.
Proper and fair punishment for errors, with a chance for recovery if you’re willing to take on risk.

If there's any confusion on the critiques of Valhalla, let Xander's second hole shine a light: Badly pulled drive toward the water, held up by the wide strip of rough separating the fairway from the penalty area. A second shot absolutely booking long of the green, catches the back bunker, and it funnels all the way down to the flat part, where he's left with a remarkably simple bunker shot considering the quality of his shots to that point. No depth to the bunker, and no punishment for playing the hole wrong. It did not take an exceptional recovery shot to make the recovery, and he makes an easy par on what has been the 3rd most difficult hole all week.
