I'm absolutely thrilled to share my first story for @nytimes!
For today's @dealbook, I previewed @Cannes_Lions and the existential debate the ad industry is having: how to embrace generative AI without being displaced by it. #CannesLions2025

My name is David and I'm too in the weeds of media buying across the spectrum of paid social tools.
I should be a CMO somewhere based on the years of experience I have. However.. that's boring. I like pushing the buttons.
Most SaaS tools I've come across are not needed. I do use a few, but I don't share publicly often about these cause these tools work for me, but you should vet them to make sure they work for you too.
I listen to books over podcasts, rarely ever marketing, but mostly about WW2 or baseball. If marketing it's usually just re-read Oglivy.
I don't think most conferences are vital to growth, but the people you meet at them are invaluable and worth the pain staking time getting there.
There are too many creative agencies in this space selling the same things, creating the same ideas. Few are breaking new ground and if they are, they are expensive and hard to get.
Most DTC brands would do wonders moving some spend to reach and frequency with the right creative content that sells THEIR story to people not ready to buy.
Most people you reach with your ads are not ready to buy, yet you painstakingly spend too much time worried about trying to get them to buy.
Building an online community for your brand is key. This isn't easy, most won't do it. That's fine, just know that you'll always be circling the wagons on a rollercoaster of CPAs.
We lost the plot of marketing when we got too much data. Now we're drowning in spreadsheets trying to find a needle in the hay stack when the true success is creating really cool marketing for really cool products and merging the two in perfect harmony waiting for some magic to happen.
Rarely does that magic happen. But the joy is in the case.
Spreadsheets and data are great. Just be aware, we're not always making the right decisions because people don't often fit into neat little boxes we try to put them in.
Ok, enough for today.

"I’ve seen games," columnist @JohnArchibald writes, reflecting on the @MLB at @RickwoodField game in Birmingham. "I have seen things that touched me in this town. But not quite like this."

I am actively investing in companies looking to change this.
IRL, social, community, consumer -- for ALL ages.

I wrote about the collapse of face-to-face socializing in in the 21st century. From 2003-2022, American adults reduced socializing by 30%. For teens, the decline was nearly 50%. There is no record of any period in history when ppl spent more time alone. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
