@mcclusk I’ve been screaming into the void that he’s had a back issue since the Boston series. His skating speed and shot speed are both down. People have speculated wrist again or knee. His spine would affect both his skating and shot.

I'd pass on the Charlie Coyle contract every day of the week. Best of luck.
There's been great value out there for cup-hungry veterans at 36-37 years-old. Spezza. JVR. Those guys - a million bucks.

The only good C in FA just disappeared, and he was 34 lol. Signed for 6M per until he’s 40… You cannot plan your roster through hope in Free Agency. Leafs management better get trading - hard - at the draft.

He hasn't looked the same since Craig Berube came in... but that also coincides with his trip to Germany. He flew out 13 games into Berube's tenure.
To me, it's been beyond deployment. Hasn't looked himself. Movement, shot, all of it.
Very curious.

@mcclusk Leafs PR must've told the media to never ask about this or something because otherwise it baffles me that no one ever does.

@mcclusk @JayOnLeafs Thanks Chris. Feel free to change your pic any time

@JayOnLeafs @LeaFs4eVeRRR Haha that's a more likely outcome than the campaign being the reason he's fired, for sure.
Ultimately doesn't make a difference. The inmates can't run the asylum.
English

@mcclusk @LeaFs4eVeRRR Funny enough I think it's going to be counterproductive to what fans think they're trying to accomplish. If the organization gives in now they're simply telling the fans that they can hold them hostage going forward with a social media campaign.

If Craig Berube were to coach the Edmonton Oilers, I promise you... you wouldn't have to worry about McDavid and Draisaitl putting up their numbers.
mckenna-pilled@willynylly
@mcclusk yeah a coach who thinks he’s David Kampf
English

@tavkniesnythews I agree, would hope that conversation happens sooner than later. I'd heard within the next 1-3 weeks and thought... you'd think this would be priority 1 for both sides.

While the Maple Leafs contemplate Craig Berube's future, I went back through the last 10 years to see how other NHL teams handled their head coach after dropping from the playoffs to the bottom 5.
There were 10 such teams in total (including Toronto this year). Here’s what the other 9 did with their head coach:
2 teams kept their coach for at least one full season
• Andrew Brunette – Nashville Predators (2023-24 → 2024-25)
• Claude Julien – Montreal Canadiens (2016-17 → 2017-18)
4 teams fired their coach mid-season during the collapse
• Jim Montgomery – Boston Bruins (2023-24 → 2024-25)
• Dominique Ducharme – Montreal Canadiens (2020-21 → 2021-22)
• Pete DeBoer – San Jose Sharks (2018-19 → 2019-20)
• John Stevens – Los Angeles Kings (2017-18 → 2018-19)
1 team fired their coach in the off-season after the collapse
• John Tortorella – Columbus Blue Jackets (2019-20 → 2020-21)
2 teams fired their coach mid-season the following year
• John Hynes* – New Jersey Devils (2017-18 → 2018-19)
• Guy Boucher** – Ottawa Senators (2016-17 → 2017-18)
*John Hynes, fired with 9-13-4 record in 2019-20.
**Guy Boucher, fired with 22-37-5 record in 2018-19.

Great thought on Danford + Tanev. Looking forward to watching him with the Marlies this week to see how he looks.
On one hand, it would have been tough putting him out there this year while the Leafs are getting torched. But if he's right there, the benefits of being around Tanev have to be considered. How could you not want to enroll him in that master class?
English

I get the hype around both. Definitely find David Carle more intriguing between the two.
The one thing I'll say in general is that I have trepidations about hiring a coach out of the NCAA. It's such a different beast because of recruiting. I think that chasm only widens in the NIL era with bigger budget programs having a substantial advantage. Show me a top recruiting program and I'll show you a mastermind with the whiteboard, kind of thing.
Guys like Dave Hakstol or David Quinn haven't translated yet. Jim Montgomery's probably the best example of success I can think of.
Hiring scouts out of the NCAA is more intriguing to me.
I like David Carle though, and I think Denver's NIL spend is significantly lower than BU's - unless they've upped it.
English

@JeremyRidgewell @OFFSIDETALK @JayOnLeafs @d_morassutti @BudsTalkin @AndrewGForbes @HStandersen I'm copping out - significant change expected from both teams, too early to say.
But I will say... I think not having Chris Tanev was more detrimental than it's given credit for. Question is... he'll be 37 in December coming off a lost season, what's he look like?
English

@mcclusk What do you like about him ? We're talking about the coach of the Leafs not a guy you wanna have a beer with after the game?
What are you on about ? Aren't you a sports insider? No one cares if you want to be his friend!
Grow up dude, getting sick of the McCluskey knows all
English

@MattyO2929 I literally said I can't think of any good reasons to bring him back as a coach, but I like the guy. No idea what you're on about.
