What is happening at Karura Forest today is both an environmental outrage and a political contradiction of the highest order, and we must name it as such. The plan to establish National Youth Service barracks inside Karura Forest, allegedly without community consultation, without an environmental impact assessment, and with trees already felled, cannot possibly be a bureaucratic error. Regional trade, especially under the African Continental Free Trade Area @AfCFTA is the antidote to increasing global turbulence. At the heart of this conversation is how to move people and goods efficiently through air, sea, and road networks. I met the AfCFTA Secretary General, Wamkele Mene, today and was encouraged to note that all protocols have been concluded, with 50 states now on board. In 2022, African countries traded goods worth USD 220 billion among themselves, with various governments issuing over 12,000 certificates of origin. This represents a huge market that we can tap into, but it also underscores the urgent need to address logistics constraints. Development banks should support the establishment of direct sea freight services within Africa to reduce cargo transport time. Currently, our goods often have to be shipped out of the continent before being shipped back, sometimes taking up to 40 days. Road and air connectivity within the continent must also be addressed through increased funding for road infrastructure and affordable regional flights. This is because to unlock trade, we must first unlock the movement of people. Kenya is willing to take full advantage of the AfCFTA to create jobs through automotive and pharmaceutical manufacturing, both for local consumption and for export. @MITIKenya

Kenya’s journey to Singapore-level prosperity is not a slogan but a viable vision driven by sound strategies. At the core of this strategic thrust sits @MITIKenya driving accelerated economic growth through manufacturing, investment, and trade partnerships. But, no engine moves alone. For this journey to succeed, state corporations under MITI must move in alignment, pulling in the same direction, guided by a shared national vision while communicating clearly to the people they serve. Kenyans are hardworking, enterprising, and opportunity-driven. With the right information, they can scale businesses, create jobs, and compete globally. Investors also rely on credible data and clear signals to determine where to place their capital. Information is not a luxury. It is business infrastructure. This is why it is critical for Kenyans and investors to understand our institutions and the services they provide. During a strategic engagement with Principal Secretaries, CEOs, and Board Chairpersons of MITI state corporations in Naivasha today, I emphasized the need to work across institutions through aggressive marketing, unified communication, and seamless working and referral systems. Our agencies must be facilitative rather than bureaucratic, customer-responsive rather than self-serving, collaborative rather than siloed, and investor-ready. We must guide investors and entrepreneurs to credible service providers, help them settle quickly, and reduce friction across the investment journey. Finally, data is non-negotiable. Data informs policy, guides investors, and tells Kenya’s story to the world. This requires credible and harmonised numbers across MITI’s three core pillars of manufacturing, trade, and investment. This is how we create jobs, expand our export basket, and develop strategic policies and communication that moves the country forward. @Investment_Ke @IndustryKE @Trade_Kenya

Kenya Association of Manufacturers has today participated in the AHK- Clean Leather Future Forum 2026, themed “Advancing Kenya’s leather sector toward cleaner, sustainable, and globally competitive production practices.” The forum aimed to promote the growth and competitiveness of Kenya’s leather sector by encouraging value addition, adoption of clean and sustainable technologies, adherence to quality standards, and stronger collaboration between government, industry players, and stakeholders to increase exports, create jobs, and position Kenya as a leading leather hub in Africa. Speaking during the forum, KAM Chief Executive @TobiasAlando highlighted the importance of the leather sector to Kenya’s economy, with immense potential for expanding exports through value addition. “Kenya’s leather industry sits at a unique intersection of agriculture, manufacturing, trade, and employment. The future of Kenya’s leather sector is not just about producing more; it is about producing better. Better for the environment, better for workers and communities, and better for Kenya’s long-term economic prosperity. If we act decisively and collaboratively, we can build a leather industry that creates quality jobs, earns foreign exchange, protects our natural resources, and competes on the global stage,” explained Mr. Alando. KAM Head of Policy and Regulatory Advocacy, @mchepchumba, highlighted the importance of value addition for the leather sector. She highlighted Kenya’s vision to transform Kenya into a hub for leather value addition in Africa, subsequently, boosting local manufacturing, creating jobs and strengthening Kenya’s position in the global leather market. Ms. Bomett highlighted the key challenges facing the leather sector, including smuggling of raw materials, high production costs, lack of quality compliance, unfavourable competition from cheap imports, and policy misalignment which hamper the sector’s competitiveness. “Addressing these challenges through coordinated government and industry action is critical to unlocking the sector’s full potential and driving sustainable growth”, noted Ms Bomett” She congratulated the leather sector for taking proactive steps to control pollution, implementing effective measures such as recycling, water and wastewater audits, specialized training programs, and the adoption of green technologies. The forum convened various stakeholders from, @Kldc_official, German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), and Tholander Abdlufttechnik GmbH #KAMAdvocacy

Today, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, in partnership with the @GermanyinKenya in Nairobi and GIZ Kenya, released a new Exports Competitiveness Study highlighting key opportunities and structural reforms that can accelerate the growth of Kenya’s manufacturing sector and expand its footprint across regional and global markets. The study assesses Kenya’s manufacturing landscape, benchmarking it against peer economies, and provides actionable recommendations aimed at strengthening industrial performance, enhancing export competitiveness, and positioning the country as a preferred investment destination. Launching the report, Peter Njoroge, Director of External Trade at the State Department for Trade, reaffirmed government commitment to advancing reforms that boost Kenya’s competitiveness. He noted that the National Export Strategy is being strengthened to promote value addition and fully utilize preferential market access. Building on this, @mchepchumba Head of Policy, Regulatory and Advocacy at KAM, emphasized that Kenya needs to urgently act on the report’s findings to reverse the export gap. She highlighted that Kenya’s export underperformance is driven primarily by domestic constraints including high energy costs, regulatory inefficiencies, and slow approval processes, which can increase exporters’ costs by 15–20 percent. Despite these challenges, the country’s potential remains significant, particularly in leather, textiles, agri-processing, edible oils, fisheries, and other manufacturing subsectors identified as high-growth value chains. Mrs. Friederike Hemker, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy in Kenya, reinforced the importance of leveraging Kenya’s entrepreneurial talent and resilience to fully harness trade opportunities. Dr. Christoph Zipfel, Director for Sustainable Economic Development at GIZ Kenya, highlighted the critical role of value chains in driving competitiveness. He emphasised that German-supported trade interventions focus on boosting productivity, strengthening industrial capacity, accelerating manufacturing, and fostering value addition, particularly in sectors such as leather and Agri-Processing, where Kenya has high growth potential. The Study key recommendations include: 🎯Enhancing national coordination of aspects related to National Export Competitiveness Framework to align relevant policies; eliminating divergent policies. 🎯Strengthening Kenya’s position within global and regional trade agreements such as EAC, AGOA, and the EU-EPA the bridging the 10-25% competitiveness gap. 🎯Reducing cost of doing business including reducing regulatory burden across the board 🎯Building strong export-ready industrial capacity including enhancing capacity utilisation of current idle industrial capacity sitting at 50%. 🎯Investing in market intelligence and export promotion.
