@mcsentis Very interesting, considering mandatory paternal leaves are proposed as a key tool to incentivize them (for instance in Chile, where the very flexible approach has a paternal take-up of less than 1%).

Happy to share a summary of my job market paper on whether paternity leave can reduce intimate partner violence at @EconomicMisfit 📊 I show the policy reduces violence, not because relationship quality improves, but because couples become more likely to separate.

@tj_ms1989 Yes, there is previous literature on paternity leave and separations. For example, Avdic and Karimi (2018) find an increase too, and attribute it to the restrictiveness of the policy, so the fact that it is mandatory might play a role.

@mcsentis @EconomicMisfit I think of good reasons for both directions! I think your work shows the relevance of considering the differences between paternity leave policies (ie mandatory/optional) when measuring their effect...

Aquesta setmana parlo d'un article acadèmic de la investigadora @mcsentis que m'ha semblat especialment interessant, i que estudia l'impacte dels permisos de paternitat obligatoris sobre la violència de gènere: "El permís de paternitat redueix gairebé a la meitat la violència de gènere greu en els tres anys posteriors al part. No és una associació casual, sinó un resultat causalment identificat gràcies al fet que la reforma creava un llindar clar: els pares de criatures nascudes just després de l’1 d’abril de 2019 estaven obligats a prendre el permís; els de criatures nascudes just abans, no. La pregunta clau és, òbviament: per què passa això? La resposta més intuïtiva, que el permís obligatori augmenta la implicació dels pares i reforça la igualtat dins la llar, no és la que troba l’estudi. O, si més no, no és la principal. L’evidència apunta cap a un mecanisme diferent: l’augment de separacions. Les dades de l’Enquesta de Població Activa mostren que les mares exposades a la reforma tenen un 13% menys de probabilitat d’estar casades i una incidència un 20% superior d’indicar que estan solteres en els anys següents al part. La interpretació és clara: el permís obligatori incrementa el temps de convivència en un moment especialment delicat, quan la parella afronta canvis profunds. Aquesta convivència intensificada actua com un “xoc d’informació” sobre la qualitat de la relació. Quan la relació és bona, el permís no altera gran cosa. Però quan hi ha indicis de maltractament latent, control o comportaments agressius, el temps compartit permet detectar-ho aviat i, sobretot, facilita que la mare surti abans de l’entorn perillós. La violència no disminueix perquè els agressors “millorin”, sinó perquè les potencials víctimes tenen l’oportunitat de detectar abans un potencial clima hostil i fugir-ne."

💡My results highlight how important it is to make it easier for mothers to leave violent partners safely and support them afterwards. More broadly, they underscore the need for public policies to reshape gender norms and promote healthier models of partnership and fatherhood
