Building housing, especially social housing, is essential. But as we keep saying: simply building more housing of any kind does not magically solve the housing crisis when lower income families cannot afford any of it. vice.com/en/article/y3w…

The Houston metro area has seen 42% more eviction filings in the last year than in a typical year before the pandemic. More than 500 evictions have been filed at The Life at Jackson Square apartment complex alone, more than one a day. bit.ly/3NiNlXT

How many renters are your state lawmakers accountable to, and how many faced eviction last year? @CityLimitsNews got an early look at a new data tool from @cornellilr that delves into the renter makeup of each state senate and assembly district: citylimits.org/2023/03/23/map…

Very cool tool that tracks, among other things, median unpaid rent sought in evictions. These revealing stats make clear that given legal/shelter costs, non-eviction solutions would produce better outcomes for tenants, landlords, and the public purse. citylimits.org/2023/03/23/map…

HB6 expands eviction timeframes from 3 days to 11 days to get current on rent. This is a necessary step toward modernizing tenant/landlord laws. NMCLP economic equity director, Maria Griego, is supporting sponsors Reps. Rubio & @ARomero_NM as expert #nmleg krqe.com/news/politics-…

...and the broader carceral system for responding to domestic violence and enforcing domestic violence-related laws, but this is not—and has never been—a consistently safe, realistic option for survivors of color, including Black survivors."

I appreciate @NNEDV's strong statement in response to the murder of Tyre Nichols: "Our work to end domestic violence cannot be separated from police violence and other state-sanctioned violence. The mainstream of our movement has, for decades, relied on law enforcement...

I remembered writing something long ago about how Black cops kill Black people too so I looked it up. I can’t believe how naive - and just honestly, missing the point - all my focus on “unconscious bias” & “cultural stereotypes” that “run deep” sounds now vox.com/2015/5/5/85474…

Here’s the original statement Memphis PD released on the horrifying attack 5 of its officers carried out against Tyre Nichols. No mention of pepper-spray, kicks, punches, or torture. Just empty sentences & lies. Police lie all the time. The media must stop printing their reports.

The work continues to build tenant power on the ground. This is slow, often grinding and always patience-demanding work. Not patience in the sense that we operate on timelines set by politicians but patience to build consciousness and infrastructure

The value in today's announcement is not in the White House's lack of action - it's in the fact they've had to acknowledge that tenants are organising for action to begin with. That's testament to on-the-ground organising, pushing for protections & against predatory landlords

The best parts of this policy are a result of tenants organizing. Check out some photos of the fierce #HomesGuarantee leaders below. We won't stop organizing until the administration delivers real, material relief to tenants across the country.

TODAY the White House releases tenant protections policy, following a lengthy process, incl. engagement with #HomesGuarantee tenant leaders. While providing some good organizing hooks, the announcement falls short of issuing directives to regulate rent. washingtonpost.com/business/2023/…

Not having to defend the entire community when someone from the group commits violence is a privilege not afforded to marginalized people. Resist the urge to flatten the narrative. Let complexities be complex, and remember we get to be human, just like everyone else.
