This is massive misinformation. It’s not from Igbo culture at all.
It’s specifically from Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and has nothing to do with the Igbo culture. I’ve seen some Igbo people trying to claim it but honestly it’s not ours to claim.
In Sinners, there’s a musical montage / dance sequence in the juke joint scene where Sammie’s music kind of transcends time. The scene shows dancers and musicians from different eras of Black culture and intentionally blends past, present and future Black musical traditions.
One of the dancers shown briefly is performing Zaouli, which is a traditional dance from the Guro people of Côte d’Ivoire. That’s also why you saw it performed at the Oscars.

Zaouli is a popular music and dance practised by the Guro communities of the Bouaflé and Zuénoula departments of Côte d’Ivoire. 🇨🇮 A homage to feminine beauty, Zaouli is inspired by two masks: the Blou and the Djela. Présent dans le film à succès « Sinners » qui a raflé quatre récompenses durant la cérémonie des OSCARS, le masque ZAOULI était présent sur la scène de la cérémonie lors d’une performance de « I Lied to You » de Miles Caton titre sur lequel le masque a fait forte impression dans le film.
