In an interview with NOW Beirut, former minister Dr. May Chidiac warned that the presence of armed actors operating within densely populated civilian neighborhoods contributes to instability and places civilians at greater risk, deepening mistrust among communities as different groups begin to feel unequally exposed to potential attacks. She argued that when armed factions operate in civilian areas, ordinary neighborhoods can quickly become flashpoints, leaving residents to bear the consequences of conflicts they did not choose.
Dr. Chidiac also sharply criticized what she described as a major “security gap” in Beirut, questioning how it could be possible for surveillance cameras to be shut down and security networks dismantled across the city. She called the situation unacceptable and warned that the absence of basic monitoring infrastructure weakens the state’s ability to ensure security, accountability, and the protection of civilians.
She further welcomed the cancellation of the proposed plan to establish a temporary shelter for displaced families in Karantina, suggesting that in the current fragile security environment such a site could have been vulnerable to infiltration by unknown individuals who might create security problems in the area, warning that without proper state control such spaces could pose additional risks for surrounding communities.
