Turks have little Central Asian DNA. Many Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, & other Anatolian peoples converted to avoid extortionate tax, legal powerlessness, & devshirme sweeps (kidnapping of sons or daughters). Their descendants make up modern Turks. It was soft-power fear, brilliant empire building.

Due to a quirk of Turkish law, I am registered in Sarız's civil records, as my father-in-law was born there. I visited twice; driving up from the south, one passes green mountainous areas that resemble Switzerland. Sarız itself lies in the part of Anatolia settled by the Avşar, likely the last Turkic tribe to enter Anatolia. To the north is an area settled by Circassians. The yellow to the east marks the beginning of scattered Kurdish presence in sparsely inhabited lands. This 1910 map is by Francis Maunsell; the green and purple areas represent Armenians and Greeks, who sadly disappeared shortly thereafter.
