It is a fight against those who fight in primary colours, who would alter the character of British democracy. The stakes are high “a very dark path” ahead. But those stakes are the very reason his MPs wonder whether they must replace him- that he isn’t the man to fight it.

Starmer set himself a hostage to fortune. These make or break speeches can almost never make, unless there is a genuinely surprising proposal. There wasn’t one in there- as is evidenced by fact all the Qs instantly return to leadership process questions.
