and by pain tolerance, I refer to the ability to grind while everything is in the shitter - grind, not just survive

Imagine what you would do if you knew you couldn’t lose the game in the short or medium term. If you had so much leverage that you could take the big swing. Many things make more sense when you look at them through the lens of inevitability and work backwards. No one believes in inevitability, of course. But if you did, you might act differently.
