Olympic Medals Didn’t Save Her
Some athletes are great in one sport.
Clara Hughes was elite in two — at the Olympics — in both Summer and Winter Games.
I’m Kate, and this is Fansplain Me.
I break down the most unbelievable stories in sports.
Tell me what I got right — or Fansplain me in the comments.
Clara Hughes grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Her childhood wasn’t easy.
Her father struggled with alcoholism.
Her parents split when she was nine.
By her early teens, Clara was drinking, using drugs, skipping school — self-destructing.
By sixteen, she wasn’t even going to class anymore.
Then one afternoon in 1988, completely bored, flipping channels, she landed on the Winter Olympics. She watched Canadian speed skater Gaétan Boucher collapse spectacularly in his final race — pushing so hard his body simply quit.
And something clicked.

@fansplainme “Competitive DNA” stands out to me. It passed on to Kobe and we were able to witness that kind of greatness again. LeBron’s athleticism is undeniable but greatness for me comes down to who gets the ball and consistently delivers as the clock hits 0:00.
Another fabulous post.

The Cruelest Olympic Story Ever Told
This is one of the cruelest Olympic stories ever told.
Dan Jansen was an American speed skater — the fastest man in the world — who spent years watching Olympic gold slip away.

Dan Jansen’s journey to gold spanned four Olympic Games.
He competed in 1984 in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. He finished 4th in the 500 meter, one position out of the medals.
Then, In 1988, at the Calgary Olympics, he was favored to medal in the 500 meters.
The night before his race, his sister Jane died of leukemia. And Dan had told her he was going to win for her.
