My daughter is 2 and a half. She can now tell you most short vowel sounds and consonant sounds reliably. She learned this entirely through songs. I couldn’t have taught without music. She’s not engaged yet, without the songs. She cannot do any PA drills. I think it shows you can teach phonics before phonemic awareness. We don’t have to look at literacy skills as purely a step ladder. They can be taught both synergistically and in isolation.

The books have arrived! I’m so proud of this collaboration with the Eric Carle organization—decodable books illustrated by one of our great children’s book artists.

We loved coding our own jumping games on @scratch in #Grade2 I love how each group put their own spin on the game and you can see their unique personality and interest. Best part was getting to play each other’s games after! @GEDSB

Literacy skills seem to fuel literacy enjoyment, rather than vice versa onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11… "The best-fitting direction-of-causation model showed that skills impacted enjoyment, while the influence in the other direction was zero."

78% of incarcerated people are illiterate. Sometimes I worry that focusing too much on literacy achievement might take some of the joys out of school. And then I remember the devastating consequences of failing kids. nces.ed.gov/pubs2007/20074…

Spontaneous Student Wondering: “Each book has about 225 pages… I read all three books… so I wonder how many pages I read?” 💭 We skip counted by 200s, then by 25s and discovered he read about 675 pages!! @GEDSB #grade2 #math #GEMAAP

425,000 students in Gr. 1-3 were tested for decoding, vocabulary & comprehension. What % had decoding & vocabulary skills, but not comprehension? 1% A “comprehension issue” might not always be what we think it is. (Thanks for this tidbit in Reading For Life @lifelonglit!)

Today we learned about Harry Jerome, a world-record-setting Black Canadian Track Star who ran the 100m race in less than 10 seconds!! After learning about him, we decided to go outside; we measured 100m to see how far we could run in just 10 seconds. @GEDSB #grade2

Kids take home a 2 pocket folder. One side is for decodable type work that has been worked on in class (code pack, UFLI reading package, sentence strip, etc) so they can read independently and the other side is for a ‘home reading’ book that we asked families to read together. 3
