Popping in to say: I am going on maternity leave in the new year, so you can currently apply to cover my beat at CBC Edmonton for a year.

The Alberta government plans to close the Red Deer overdose prevention site in 2025 and replace it with a mobile addictions medicine clinic and other recovery supports. The first time an Alberta community with an existing SCS will totally remove it. cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…

#yyccc chamber has a new look. At least, on the council side of the room. First real update since building opened in 1985. Old (left pic) and new (right pic).

@perreaux I’m ready to say it: I’ll happily take -40 C over 35 C and 10+ AQHI smoke. It’s impossible.

Update: all fraud charges have been stayed against Curtis Quigley as well as his co-accused, his former common-law spouse. The whole criminal case won't be going ahead. cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…

A strange and tragic twist to a story I've been following since last year — a B.C. man due to go to trial in Edmonton next year for allegedly running a Ponzi scheme is dead, which means the charges against him will be stayed: cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…

The charges in this case were widely reported when Edmonton police announced them last year. Here are more details about what's being alleged, which I dug up from civil bankruptcy filings: cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…

@DeetoriaDee Right, which I reported in my article. Just wanted to address several people asking why he didn’t just submit phone records to refute the claim. But point is, law society panel isn’t deciding whether he was distracted driving, it’s the events after that they’re looking at.
English

@meksmith It was said he was looking at his screen, not that he was on a call or texting..

I listened to all three days of former justice minister Kaycee Madu's law society hearing. Here's a rundown of some of what Madu had to say about his 2021 phone call to EPS Chief Dale McFee just minutes after getting a traffic ticket: cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…

And here are details from McFee's testimony on the first day of proceedings: cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…

@kowalchukfarms1 Hey John, I'm a CBC reporter working on a story about the current growing season after worrying about drought this year. Hoping we might be able to chat about how conditions are looking in your area, with seeding wrapped up. DM or email me if you can — thanks!

Today’s St. Albert committee of the whole meeting was already going to be a long one, but I wasn’t expecting it to start with a 45 minute (and ongoing) convo where the committee deliberates the purpose of volunteering and how to increase “awareness.”
Nothing to come on this. 🙃

@AlexanderQuon Every time I'm there I can't get over the fact that there are only, I think, 3 Starbucks in the whole city? And they're all within Safeways or Chapters.

Important update on this story from @wallissnow today. I asked RCMP in 2022 if ASIRT would investigate this case. They said no. Now, ASIRT investigation concludes charges against officers should be considered, but Crown will not pursue a criminal case. x.com/meksmith/statu…
Madeline Smith@meksmith
Ok, major update. I specifically asked RCMP on Wednesday whether ASIRT would be investigating the circumstances of this arrest and they said no.

RCMP officers who arrested an autistic 16-year-old at a St. Albert playground will not face criminal charges even though Alberta's police watchdog says the teenager was mistakenly identified as a drug user and unlawfully detained: cbc.ca/news/canada/ed…
