I have come back to #COP28, because we are on the brink of climate disaster & this conference must mark a turning point. I am here to renew my urgent appeal to leaders: Recommit to the 1.5°C warming limit. End the fossil fuel age. Deliver climate justice. Make #COP28 count.

In Antarctica, I saw for myself & heard from scientists how ice loss is accelerating in dangerous ways. Climate change is wreaking havoc. Fossil fuels are the main culprit. At #COP28, leaders must act to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C & end the fossil fuel age.

#ClimateChange is exceptional and caused by human greenhouse gas emissions We are causing #globalwarming 100 times faster than past natural changes We are taking Earth’s climate way beyond natural limits, with carbon dioxide and temperatures levels not seen for 3 million years

How often will people flee from hellscapes like #Greece before the penny drops that this is a climate emergency? This is not just a minor local incident that disrupted a one-off holiday. The situation will only escalate unless significant mitigation is taken - 2021 video.

The #ClimateCatastrophe is now accelerating so rapidly that we will witness impacts on global civilisation: more inflation, food shortages, mortality across age groups, joblessness, authoritarianism, conflict. Either way, only a “civilisation time-out” would have saved us.

2023 is the year of serious climate consequences. This year, energy entering the oceans is equivalent to the total energy input of almost the past 2 decades combined. There is no easy way back at this point - the options for feasible mitigation are now extremely limited.

The ground temperature in some areas of Spain has hit more than 60C! (140F) Sixty C! This is no longer a "Holiday" destination - #Spain is now a torturous sweatshop. You can't sustain crops in this heat for long - nor a society.

5. There are solutions to the climate crisis, but it will require a fundamental re-think of how we are living. This is an excellent article by Economic Anthropologist, Professor Jason Hickel outlining what genuine climate action would look like (10/11) currentaffairs.org/2021/11/what-w…
