What’s the difference? During Land Reform CCP mobilized the peasants to condemn landlord class & to confiscate the land for redistribution. Up to 2 mil landlords lost their lives in the process. Only 6 yrs later all the land was collectivized. Mao’s disastrous Great Leap Forward Campaign brought widespread famine (1959-62) that claimed up to 50 mil lives. Who’s to blame for the disaster? The CCP said it was the fault of local & village leaders who failed to carry out Mao’s instructions correctly. Again, peasants were mobilized to condemn the low level party leaders, again violence was deployed. Some 88,000 cadre lost their lives & more than 5 mil were persecuted. This campaign was the prelude to the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), in which some 20 mil died.
